And so it begins…

I know everyone has been waiting to hear about how we’re beginning our 2021/22 training year and I’m excited to be able to outline our initial plans this morning. Obviously, some of this is tentative based on the state of current COVID-19 measures, but we’re optimistic that we can get back to in-person training in the next month. We’ll start with some virtual activities in preparation for a proper start and the approval of in-person training, but the bulk of these are administrative and shouldn’t take away from the program that we know and love.

Our first administrative matters will be annual validation forms and uniform exchanges. We’ll be sending out the validation forms for you to review and return over the next few days. For uniform exchanges, we’re going to have everyone fill out the sizing forms for both dress and field uniforms so that CI Dau can have everything ready for you on our uniform exchange nights this month. Links to those forms can be found below and we’re asking that those be filled out as soon as possible. Some items may need to be ordered and we want to minimize any unnecessary delays.

We’re also looking to welcome new cadets beginning on our first (tentative) in-person training night in October. If you know someone who you think would get a lot out of our program, bring them out that night or on any following training night.

Here’s our tentative outline for the first few months:

2021/9/15 – Staff/Instructors’ Training Meeting to Review the Year’s Training Plan
2021/9/22 – Administration Night, Uniform Exchanges, Instructional Techniques Review for Instructors
2021/9/29 – Administration Night, Uniform Exchanges, Instructional Techniques Review for Instructors
2021/10/6 – First In-Person Training Night (Tentative)
2021/10/13 – In-Person Training Night (Tentative)
2021/10/20 – In-Person Training Night (Tentative)
2021/10/27 – In-Person Training Night (Tentative)
2021/11/3 – In-Person Training Night (Tentative)
2021/11/10 – In-Person Training Night – Remembrance Day Preparations (Tentative)
2021/11/11 – Remembrance Day Activities (Tentative)
2021/11/17 – In-Person Training Night (Tentative)
2021/11/24 – In-Person Training Night (Tentative)
2021/12/1 – In-Person Training Night (Tentative)
2021/12/8 – In-Person Training Night (Tentative)
2021/12/15 – Annual Mess Dinner (Tentative)
2021/12/16 – 2022/1/6 – Winter Stand-Down (No Training)

The above schedule doesn’t include Monday night training activities and field training exercises. Once we have everything lined up for the regular schedule, we’ll be working to get these solidified as soon as possible.

Weekly Routine Orders outlining specifics will commence tomorrow and will outline any necessary adjustments to the above.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone and finally restarting our cadet program in full. Welcome back! I hope you’re all as enthusiastic as we are!

Uniform / Uniform Parts Request

Good afternoon.

With the minimal contact restrictions that are in place for COVID-19, we’re having to alter our process for getting new uniforms and replacements for uniform items that no longer fit. Previously, an appointment would be made with the Supply Officer, who would take measurements and provide the necessary items. Now, we need to split some of that responsibility. The new procedure is as follows:

Cadets will take an inventory of what uniform parts they have and identify which no longer fit. They will then take their measurements, with the assistance of parents/guardians, as required, using the guide found here:

Logistik Unicorp Measurement Instructions

Once all of this is complete, cadets will fill out the “Uniform / Uniform Parts Request” form found here:

(You need to be logged into the web site to see the link.)

The Supply Officer, upon receiving the request, will contact the cadet if there are any questions and will then arrange for any items needed.

When the items are available, the cadet will be contacted and will bring the items to be replaced in a plastic bag to the next in-person training night. The Supply Officer will leave a plastic bag containing the replacement items at the Administration Desk for the cadet to collect.

Please let me know if you have any difficulties with the form or have any questions about the new process.

Field Training Uniform (Update)

Good morning.

We’ve had nine (9) cadets reply back with their sizes for the upcoming field training uniform, which is a just around the 40% mark. Initial orders are being placed today with the rest being entered as we get the information. If you have already submitted your measurements, thank you. If not, please refer to the original post and submit your information as soon as you can.

Field Training Uniform

Here we are almost halfway through our semi-isolated summer and it’s time to start considering our new training year. Unfortunately, we don’t yet have full details on what things are going to look like when we start things up again, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we do.

One thing we do have is an update to our cadet uniforms. You have probably noticed that the Air Cadets are the only one of Canada’s DND-sponsored youth programs without a standard field training uniform. We do almost everything in our blues. This leads to a lot of uniform upkeep and a lack of identity when we’re doing out-of-uniform activities. This is about to change.

This training year, Air Cadets will be issued field training uniforms (FTUs) in which to do most of our day-to-day training. However, while public health measures remain to combat the spread and transmission of the COVID-19 virus, we are requesting your help to provide us with the measurements required to place the orders. In order to do that, we are asking you to consult the attached measuring instructions fill out the linked form as soon as possible.

  • This form should be completed with the assistance of an adult.
  • Individuals being measured should remove bulky items such as wallets and mobile phones from their pockets.
  • They should NOT stand at the “attention” position.
  • All measurements should be taken close but not too tight due to slight growth potential.

Please contact our Supply Officer, CV Dau, at joachim.dau@809cadets.ca if you have any questions.

Please note that you need to be logged into the site in order to access the form.

New Year’s Day Levees

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and are looking forward to an exciting New Year’s Eve.

For those cadets who will be attending the various New Year’s Day Levees (including those being held a little later on the 4th), you have not only permission, but encouragement to wear your uniforms to these events.

The first of 2020’s Weekly Routine Orders will be published before the weekend.

Updated Dress Instructions

Good morning.

Updated Dress Instructions have been posted and are available here: Dress Instructions. There aren’t many changes to how the uniform is worn, but the numbered orders of dress have been completely reworked. For your reference, a cheat-sheet has also been posted here: Numbered Orders of Dress (2019). We will be adhering to the new dress instructions as of today and will be using the new numbered orders in all further communications, so it’s important to become familiar with them.

Cadet Uniform Modernization

Cadets, if you haven’t seen the uniform modernization survey, here’s your chance to have a voice! Here are some of the different reactions so far.

The survey is open to cadets, League partners, stakeholders as well as COATS and CIC Officers.

This survey works best on the Google Chrome browser. It may take a few minutes to load, so please be patient. There are a lot of pictures!

Vimy Trip

For cadets participating in this month’s trip to the UK and France, a few announcements:

  1. Monday night at 8pm: Uniform Rolling/Packing Session. I’ll be teaching everyone how to roll their uniforms in order to minimize wrinkles while travelling. It’s recommended that you bring your uniforms and your luggage so that you can have your uniform correctly packed tonight for the trip.
  2. Wednesday night: Presuming that you’ll have your uniform already packed, dress for cadets on the Vimy Trip will be black pants, white shirt, and black tie. Remember those first few weeks when you joined and you’ll do just fine.
  3. Passports: Just to make sure that I have the final list for check-in, bring your passports with you either on Monday or Wednesday so that I can verify them against the information I have.

It’s going to be a great trip!

UNIFORMS! All you need to know is printed in CATO 55-04: (available to all cadets on the website) Air Cadet Dress Instructions. Check your pants for “railroad tracks”, your boots for dull spots, your dress shirt for proper crease position. Now is the time to be picky about how you look! For those cadets that missed the boot polishing class on Monday night, Cpl Hill will be leading it tonight concurrent with our parade practice.

Mandatory Attendance May 17, 24, 27 & 31. We have 3 Wed nights total remaining. Tonight and next week we will be having our final Annual Parade Practices. (Unfortunately, the Snowbirds Air show was cancelled for next week). We need everyone out so we are ready for our Annual Ceremonial Review Parade on Sat 27 May 2017 at 3pm. All cadets are required to attend in order to complete their level.
