Sherkston Shores Sky Fest 2018

There will always be those individuals in the world who think that jumping out of perfectly serviceable aircraft is a good idea. We don’t need to understand these people to respect the courage it takes to actually do it.

99 years ago in 1919, Frank Ellis became the very first person to parachute from an airplane over Canada, Crystal Beach to be specific.

In commemoration of this event, the Sherkston Shores Beach Resort and Campground will be holding Sky Fest 2018, featuring skydiving exhibitions, an appearance by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s WW2-era Douglas DC3 aircraft, and lots of summer activities.

The squadron isn’t doing anything specific for the event, but for those interested in going on their own, details can be found bellow.

Summer Training

Good morning.

I’ve attached the links to the Parent Briefing given on our last training day, along with the associated Joining Instructions for each Cadet Training Centre. I’m still working on finding detailed instructions for CTC Saint-Jean’s Advanced Aerospace Course, but the basics can be found in the linked Information Booklet for the Eastern Region. I will update everyone with more detailed information as soon as I have it.

Also, we’re expecting to receive movement instructions with specific dates and times over the next week. Nothing has been posted yet, but these will be transmitted as soon as they arrive.

809 Senior Rafting Trip – Part Deux

Wow!  What a fantastic trip.   There was great food, a whole lot of incredible fun, and some great horsing around on the raft.  Thanks go out to Lt Russell, CV Carbone and Mr. Zalepa for helping out.  Cheers to our River Guides – Brandon and Gus from OWL.  You have the best job on the planet.  The biggest shout out of all goes to all the seniors that attended.  Your were a big part of making this past year an incredible success and It was our pleasure, as staff, to set this up for you.  You made this one incredibly fun trip.  To those seniors that are leaving us, I hope you enjoyed your last weekend with us.  Come back and visit when you get a chance.

Have a great summer!

809 Rafting Trip

Bravo Zulu to OCdt Dan Couroux for an AMAZING job in organizing our most recent trip to Owl Rafting on the Ottawa River. A great time was had by all, and wouldn’t have happened without his organizing and chasing.

We are all home tired and ready for some down time. I hope everyone has a great time at summer training. See everyone in the fall.

Canada’s Wonderland Trip Tomorrow!

Final details on the Canada’s Wonderland trip tomorrow!

Cadets should arrive in civilian dress no later than 0815h (8:15am) with the following updated kit list:

  • Health Card (Absolute must. You can’t go without it.)
  • Bag Lunch (Mark it with your name!)
  • 809 Ball Cap (optional)
  • Sunblock
  • Water Bottle
  • Bathing Suit and Towel (There is a water park to be considered.)
  • Small Backpack

Cadets will travel in groups of at least two while at the park.

If you want to rent a locker for Splash Works, I’m told that it’s unreasonably expensive. ($15 minimum rental cost.) Recommendation is to travel in larger groups and take turns watching the backpacks to keep costs down.

OCdt Couroux and I will be the drivers/supervisors for the day. Expect to come and pick up your thoroughly exhausted cadet at 2130h (9:30pm) at 809 HQ. It’s going to be fun!

Squadron Trip to Canada’s Wonderland

Good morning!

Here are the details for this Sunday’s Canada’s Wonderland trip.

We’re planning to leave from 809 HQ at 1875 Niagara Stone Road at 0830h (8:30am) and return at approximately 2130h (9:30pm) after a full and exhausting day at the park. The bulk of the cost is being covered by the Squadron Sponsorship Committee, but cadets are expected to contribute $40 to the trip and bring their own packed lunch. Dinner will be provided at or near the park.

Cadets should arrive in civilian dress no later than 0815h (8:15am) with the following:

  • Health Card
  • Bag Lunch
  • 809 Ball Cap
  • Sunblock
  • Water Bottle
  • Bathing Suit and Towel (There is a water park to be considered.)

We’ll be taking two mini-vans and have a capacity for up to 14 cadets. If we get more, I’m sure we can work something out.

Please bring the $40 to our final parade night on Wednesday.
