809 families, each year the squadron is given an allotment of lottery tickets to sell to support both the squadron and the Ontario Provincial Committee (OPC). The OPC is the organization that runs/supports elements like flying/gliding, effective speaking competitions, and many more. Due to COVID they were unable to deliver this lottery via paper tickets but have arranged to run the lottery online. Instead of being responsible for 2 books of tickets per cadet, we are required to sell only 3 tickets per cadet this year…we can certainly sell more. Please click the link on our website and participate in this year’s lottery…no physical prizes this year ALL CASH!! Thank you for your support!
Passing of Capt Brian Howard, CD
It is with sadness that I must announce yesterday afternoon’s passing of Capt Brian Howard, CD. Capt Howard was 809 Newark’s seventh Commanding Officer, serving in the role from 1987 to 1991. His contribution to our squadron has already been commemorated by the Captain Brian Howard Memorial Award for Squadron Warrant Officer and his ongoing commitment to the entire Niagara Air Group will not soon be forgotten.
The experiences that we pass to others are what make us immortal. Thank you for being a friend to all of us, Brian.

Very Important CAP update:
This message just came down from RCSU with regards to the CAP. I have received the new joining instructions, however I just learned that the links are flawed and that I should expect a revised copy shortly. As soon as I get it, I’ll email to each of the cadets in the squadron. Please read the following:

Due to technical issues with the CCO Portal, we will NOT be using this option for the upcoming #CentralCAPCruise this week.
The cadets will no longer need an account for the CCO Portal. Instead, the CAP content will now be hosted using an alternative platform. No account creation or sign-up is required.
Your corps/squadron staff have been sent an email with details. They will be in the best position to help you access everything you need to have fun this week!
See you on deck tomorrow at 9am SHARP!

Prince Philip Passes – He was 99
Hi everyone,
Passing along sad news. Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth’s husband & the Duke of Edinburgh, passed away this morning, peacefully at Windsor Castle. He was 99. Prince Philip was a large supporter of youth programs and established the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, a program which a lot of cadets, including myself, have participated in. Follow this link for more information.

104th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge – April 9th-12th, 1917.
This Friday marks the 104th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge. This battle is of major significance to our country as it marks the first time all Canadian divisions, made up of Canadian soldiers from all across our country, fought together as one army. Vimy Ridge was secured from the German 6th Army by Canadian soldiers after 4 days of fighting which came to its conclusion in the evening of April 12. This battle is widely regarded to symbolize Canada’s coming of age as it’s own country. There were 10,602 Canadian casualties (3598 soldiers killed and 7004 wounded).
809 Sqn visited Vimy Ridge in France on 2 occasions. Here are some photos from the visit in October, 2017.

CO’s Message
Good morning!
Please accept my apology for getting this week’s WROs out late. Hopefully, OCdt Couroux’s new “DCO’s Corner” posting provided some food for thought in the meantime. We can expect to see more information from him each week going forward.
Congratulations once again to LAC Yuditskaya for placing first in our Effective Speaking Competition last week. One of the judges commented that her impromptu speech was one of the best they had ever heard. Well done! All of the cadets who were involved in our Effective Speaking program should be congratulated for their dedication. It’s not an easy thing to do at the best of times and working it virtually adds yet another layer of difficulty. Thanks once again to CV Gowans for all her hard work running the program this year and for her patience with the various technological hurdles that presented themselves. Lastly, a big “Thank You!” goes out to our Mrs. Lapointe, Mrs. Mehrotra, Mrs. Taylor-Roehm, Maj (Retired) Kempston, and 2Lt Nicolescu for all of your supporting effort during the competition.
The official word from the Government of Ontario has indicated that next week’s April Break is still a go, so we won’t be conducting training during this period. There is a virtual program running for all cadets called the Cadet Activity Program. I’ll be getting more information on the details this evening and will pass that on as soon as I have it for you.
Regular training will be on Wednesday night as usual. See you then!

DCO’s Corner 04APR21 – Cadet Advisory Council & Virtual Summer Courses
Happy Easter 809,
I’ll be publishing a new column on a weekly basis to offset the WRO’s published by Capt. Lemoine. I’ll try to find some cool items that include training, some history, and some opportunities that may be coming down the pipe that you may like to hear about.
To start, I’d like to take this opportunity to let you know that there’s still going to be some exciting summer opportunities this year even though in person training has been cancelled. Check these options out and let us know if you’d like to take part:
Cadet Advisory Council
This summer, Cadets Canada will be creating a Cadet Advisory Council. This is a chance for you, a senior cadet, to influence the direction that the program will be heading in the future. 3 cadets will be chosen per RCSU to take part in the program. Check out the video below, along with the info link and let us know if you’d like to take part. The sooner the better please as I don’t believe that the spots will be available for long.

Virtual Summer Training:
There is a wide variety of virtual training courses that are being offered for 2021. With a combination of instructor led, and self paced courses, cadets will be able to earn qualifications, learn new skills, and connect with friends across Canada. All of the courses will be operated on a new platform called CADET365. More on this later.
Here’s a list of what is going to be available:
Qualification Courses:
- Virtual Basic Aviation
- Virtual Advanced Aviation
- Virtual Aerospace
- Virtual Airport Operations
- Virtual Survival
- Virtual Military Band – Basic, Intermediate & Advanced
- Virtual Pipes and Drums – Basic, Intermediate & Advanced
- Virtual Cadet Correspondent
- Introduction to Fitness & Sports
- Virtual Coaching
- Virtual Instructional Techniques
- Effective Communication
Non-Qualification Courses:
- Cadet Cyber Training
If you’re interested in these courses and would like more info, please check out this link and then let us know.

More new items will be posted on a weekly basis. Now, go enjoy your Easter and we’ll see you on Wednesday night.

CO’s Message
Good afternoon.
Monday night is our Effective Speaking Competition. Thanks to CV Gowans for all of her help preparing the cadets for this evening. Thanks also to Mrs. Taylor-Roehm, Mrs. Mehrotra, Mrs. Lapointe, and 2Lt Nicolescu who will be serving as judges and teller. The usual Google Meet will be used for participating cadets to gather out of sight of the judges and the general public. All others will use a separate Meet that has been set up for the event itself. We’re looking forward to seeing some compelling presentations!
The current COVID-19 situation has unfortunately caused in-person summer training to be cancelled. I’ve already spoken to each of the cadets who are affected by this and have discussed the situation with them personally. In the hopes of in-person training being a possibility over the next few months, we’ll be looking into what we can do as a unit to compensate for this. More information will be coming as we have it.
This week, at WO2 Abt’s request, Monday’s cooking class is being moved to 1800-1900 instead of 2000-2100 in order to correspond with most cadets’ dinner hours. Remember to join the Meet an hour before the Effective Speaking Competition rather than after.
Next week, with the effective speaking program being ended, clubs will begin at 1900 rather than at 2000.
See you on Monday and Wednesday!
