Power Pilot Training Course

PPTC Wings

Good morning!

We’ve received our first offer for summer training and it’s a big one! Congratulations to FSgt Vidal, who has been selected for (and has accepted) the offer to attend this summer’s Power Pilot Training Course. Please take the opportunity to congratulate him on his selection this Wednesday.

I’m also taking this as a sign that offers for other courses will start trickling in soon. For everyone else who has applied, have just a little more patience.

Familiarization Flight Reminder – Saturday, 07MAY2022, 0700hrs

Good evening,

Sorry about the late message.   Here’s a quick reminder to the cadets taking part in tomorrow’s familiarization flight.

  1. MANDATORY: Be at the squadron headquarters no later than 0700 tomorrow AM (07MAY2022)
  2. MANDATORY: Wear the appropriate uniform (C5 is the dress of the day.   If you don’t have a complete C5 uniform, C3B is permitted – also providing it’s complete.   Last resort = black pants & white shirt)
  3. MANDATORY: Wear your issued face mask
  4. MANDATORY: Bring your provincial health card
  5. MANDATORY: Bring a bottle of water and snacks for the day,
  6. SUGGESTED: Bring something to do on the bus
  7. SUGGESTED: Bring a phone or camera so that you can take pics of your experience

Please be advised, failure to follow the MANDATORY directions WILL result in being turned away.   The SUGGESTED items are not required, however they will make your day much more enjoyable.  I will have a COVID screening declaration for you to sign once you arrive.

Please remind your parents to stick around after they drop you off, until they’re released, so that we can make sure they’re available to bring you home should the need arises.

I’m not sure when we’re returning, so please advise your parents that I’ll be asking each of you to call home when we’ve left London for home, which is about a 2hr warning.  I’ll then get you to call them when we’re about 1/2hr out from the headquarters so they can meet you when we arrive.

Have a great evening everyone.  I’m looking forward to an exciting day of flying with each of you tomorrow.

Regards,

Lt Couroux

Upcoming Activities

Good afternoon!

We have two upcoming activities that need final commitments.

RCAF Familiarization Flying this Saturday, 7 May
“Top Gun: Maverick” Screening on Thursday, 26 May

If you are planning on going to either or both of these events, we need to know as soon as possible so that we can provide firm numbers to the organizers.

In the event that you cannot attend this evening, please send your conformation to the squadron email address. For that matter, even if you are attending this evening and just want to make sure we have you on the lists, send that email anyway.

Future Pilots – Watch This: A Conversation with Captain Matthew Kutryk, CF-18 Pilot

I thought this would be interesting for anyone who plans on becoming a pilot.

Captain Kutryk was a cadet at 551 Whitehorse Lions Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron and 341 Mundare Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Mundare, Alberta. He spent three years as a Civilian Instructor, gliding at the Villeneuve Cadet Flying Site in support of the familiarization flying program before joining the Canadian Armed Forces in 2006.

This session was coordinated by the Regional Cadet Support Unit Northwest Air Operations section as an online training opportunity for cadets this summer.

Ground School for Summer Pilot Training Courses

FLYING SCHOLARSHIP 2018 APPLICANTS: 809 Cadets who are eligible to participate (age 15 for Glider, age 16 for Power), and have transportation to Fort Erie (beginning tomorrow), are to contact Capt Palumbo TONIGHT.

337 and 79 are joining forces to provide their gliding and flying scholarship candidates with a ground school program and we would like to extend an invitation to all NAG Squadrons.  I am aware that some squadrons may already have other arrangements, but if you don’t please fell free to join us.

We are asking that cadets who attend be eligible to apply for a gliding or flying scholarship this training year, and come prepared with sufficient note taking materials (paper, pens, etc.) and a package of cue/index/recipe cards.

  • Date: Thursdays (beginning this week)
  • Time: 1900-2100
  • Location: 337 LHQ – Fort Erie Leisureplex Lions Banquet Hall, 3 Municipal Centre Drive, Fort Erie

I am asking that you respond only if you have cadets who would be attending and let us know numbers so that we can ensure we have the proper meeting space available.

I also would like to take this opportunity to thank those cadet flying site and squadron staff who were carrying the torch of the NAG ground school for the past years.  Your hard work and dedication to our cadets is appreciated.

Thanks,

Nic

C4A: AC, LAC, Cpl, FCpl

SUPPER MARKET: for those returning cadets on the DRILL TEAM – meet at the NOTL Supper market in front of the CIBC at 630pm in your uniform (see dress orders above). You will be driven back to the Sqn at the closing of the market by Mrs Lett & OCdt Couroux.

REGULAR TRAINING NIGHT: for all new cadets and returning cadets not on the drill team, meet at our regular time & place: Royal Elite International Academy at 630pm in the small gymnasium.

NAMES UPDATED BELOW: Confirm with Capt Palumbo if you are available either by email or text msg (289)783-1942 or tammypalumbo@yahoo.ca

Airport Security Meeting: 730pm at NOTL Airport – for the following cadets only. . You must be able to miss school next Wed for the Snowbirds performance.  You will be driven to the meeting from the cadet hall/supper market, then back to the sqn for closing parade.

DRIVING IS AVAILABLE FOR CADETS COMING FROM ST.CATHARINES to the SNOWBIRDS next Wed. Speak with Capt Palumbo tonight to arrange for a pick up.

Bottle Drive Saturday:

I have had several requests from parents with children not in the squadron asking if they can help out at the Bottle Drive for community hours for high school or just to help. Yes! We would love to have them, however two things must happen: your child must remain at the bottle sorting location at the VanNoort Greenhouse (not go out driving) and there must be a family member present to supervise them. As they are not cadets, they do not fall under the supervision requirements for our Staff.

SNOWBIRDS VISIT INFO:

Snowbirds 20 Sep 17: On the day of the event, cadets in the list above will need to arrange transportation, either through the sqn, or with your parents, to get to the NOTL airport no later than 1300. Dismissal time of 1830, staff will bring you over to the sqn for our regular training night. Dinner is provided.

To be clear: the 1pm arrival time on 20 Sep is only for those cadets listed in the airport security meeting, they must attend both parts, and must be able to miss school on Wed the 20th. CHECK NOW with your parents to make sure you are available. REMAINING CADETS are encouraged to attend the event at 4pm in your uniform, then head over to the squadron afterwards for our regular training night.
