CO’s Message

Participation in last week’s L3/L4 Aviation Combined Subjects exam appears to have been good. If those cadets who sat the exam can provide any feedback, please let OCdt Couroux or myself know. We’re always looking for ways to improve.

This week’s virtual activity is the Paper Airplane Contest that was announced last week. OCdt Couroux will be putting out the link information for the Hangouts Meet on Wednesday at 1900 (7:00pm) so that everyone can demonstrate their planes and judge winners in the various categories.

The Anniversary Pin competition is still running and we’re still accepting submissions. Here’s a link to the original post:

We’ll have more activities posted over the coming weeks and are already preparing for the 2020/2021 training year this fall.

Stay committed and stay safe. This too shall pass.

Learn the countries of Europe in less than 6 minutes!

While our wonderful Cadet Program which is widely recognised for helping cadets develop skills for life is currently on hold, there is no doubt that the Covid-19 physical distancing also provides the opportunity for our cadets to acquire knowledge and try out other activities. These are no less important for their lives and their communities. Some examples of such would be: helping neighbours in need, showing gratitude for front line workers, helping families with cooking or gardening, building financial literacy, learning history or geography and many more others.

We encourage cadets to think about and share their experiences during the isolation with fellow cadets and staff during the 809 Cadets zoom meeting on Wed, May 6th, 2020. Yes, that is the same meeting called by OCdt Couroux for the “Paper Airplane Contest”! We encourage everybody to participate, whether you build a plane or not!

We also launch another challenge for you: Learn the countries of The World and their capitals! Let’s do this in phases, more specifically by continent.

To help you, we have researched some YouTube videos containing the fastest and easier way to remember those names using mnemonics, which means silly stories meant to help you recall the information.

For now, let’s learn the countries of Europe in less than 6 minutes!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdCu2sKhYfk

Once you’ve memorized  the countries, spend some time to look at flags and capitals in another 7 minutes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJeuVeOSbWk

Other similar videos for the rest of the continents to come soon!

You will have to opportunity to send us feedback and show off your knowledge during the zoom meeting on May 6th. Looking forward to seeing everyone then!

CO’s Message

Last week’s L3/L4 Aviation Combined Subjects review appeared to have gone well. Thanks to WO2 Gowans, WO1 Lett and OCdt Couroux for facilitating that. I was only able to look in on it occasionally as I was involved in another meeting at the time, but I liked what I saw. If those cadets who participated can provide any feedback on how they thought the session went, please let me know. This is a new platform and we’re looking for any opportunity to make it better.

Following up on the review, we have the exam this Wednesday night. As I mentioned before, this is optional and is being offered as an opportunity for cadets to challenge their knowledge. It does not affect training results.

The links to the review material were in WRO two weeks ago and can also be found in the Classroom resources. The exam will be held at 1900 (7:00pm) on Wednesday night. For those of you taking part, best of luck!

Remember that we still have the Anniversary Pin competition running. If you’ve got a vision, some time, and wouldn’t mind a little bit of squadron fame, we would love to see your ideas for celebrating our unit’s 50th anniversary next year. Here’s a link to the original post:

OCdt Couroux has already posted the information on our Paper Airplane Contest and 2Lt Nicolescu has put out some Aviation Humour this week. I’m hoping to have a global scavenger hunt ready for next week, so stay tuned.

We’re still looking for more ideas, so if you have an idea for something you’d like to run for your fellow cadets, let me know.

Because humour…

Pilots vs Maintenance Engineers

After every flight, pilots fill out a form, called a “gripe sheet” which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems; document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.

Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers.

P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.

P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.

P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.

P: Something loose in cockpit.
S: Something tightened in cockpit.

P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on back-order.

P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent.
S: Cannot reproduce the problem on the ground.

P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.

P: #2 Propeller seeping prop fluid
S: #2 Propeller seepage normal – #1 #3 and #4 propellers lack normal seepage

P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to a more believable level.

P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That’s what they’re for

P: IFF inoperative.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.

P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you’re right.

P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.

P: Aircraft handles funny.
S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious.

P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics

And the best one for last.

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget.

809 Newark Sqn Paper Airplane Contest – Wednesday, May 6…1900

Scramble, scramble, scramble…Aircrews, man your planes…

Hey 809….We’re looking to you to become designers of some funky, maybe practical, but also fun paper airplanes. We’ll be reviewing them on a Zoom meeting on Wednesday, May 6. We’ll pick out winners of 3 categories..

1/ Most realistic design….WW2 warbird…Canadian Forces Aircraft….Civilian Airliner….Whatever. Design and build a paper airplane model.  Colour it so that it looks as realistic as possible. Don’t worry about flight on this. It’s the look that counts.

2/ Most Fantastic Funky Fliers… Go all out with a crazy design. Take something from a movie….a cartoon… or just from the top of your head. Design something spectacular to show off. If it flies…well bonus.

3/ Best practical design. This is where we put together a paper airplane that’s born to fly. The airplane with the best flight characteristics gets the heads up on everyone in this category.

809 will get together on Wednesday May 6 at 1900 via Zoom (invitations will go out to take part).   Here you can show off your creation, talk about your influences and show how much air your flier can get.  Send me your email addresses so I can send you an invite.

We’d like everyone to take part.  Even if you’d prefer being an observer.  Let me know.

Have fun with this and bring your A-game.  Show the squadron who the best of the best is.

CO’s Message

I’ve received a little bit of feedback concerning the L3/L4 Combined Aviation Subjects review and exam. There is some concern that this is a live exam and that there will be a pass/fail component to it. The cadet training program for the year has been concluded and all cadets have been given a passing mark for all components of this year’s training, so this is entirely optional, though encouraged. There are two purposes to what we’re doing with the L3/L4 Combined Aviation Subjects review and exam:

  1. Testing out the Classroom and Hangouts Meet functions for suitability for further unit training
  2. Providing an opportunity for the L3 and L4 cadets to challenge themselves and see how they would have done

The links to the review material were in the last week’s WRO and the first Q&A session will be at 1900 (7:00pm) on Wednesday night with the exam to follow at 1900 on 29 April.

If you’re interested in participating and haven’t done so already, please contact me so that you can be set up with an 809cadets.ca email address for joining the class.

Remember that we still have the Anniversary Pin competition underway. If you’ve got ideas and a little bit of spare time, we would love to see your ideas for celebrating our unit’s 50th anniversary next year. Here’s a link to the original post:

Anniversary Pin Competition

We’re also going to be proposing fun activities that we can do over the summer while we’re in isolation mode. Items being considered thus far:

  • Model aircraft competition
  • “Boots and a Movie” boot polishing and on-line hangout
  • Global scavenger hunt

Any new ideas for something you’d like to run for your fellow cadets are being wholeheartedly sought. Email me directly if you’ve got something you want to put forward.

Stay home. Stay safe.

The Latest News

Good afternoon.

As I’m sure most of you are already aware, the announcement came out yesterday that the Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers program has been suspended until 31 August 2020. This wasn’t the news that any of us were hoping for, though it makes complete sense when we consider the circumstances we find ourselves in as a society.

For those of you who haven’t already heard the announcement from BGen Cochrane, the Commander of the National Cadet and Junior Canadian Rangers Support Group can be seen here:

The full general order can be found here:

CANCDTGEN 015/20

The loss of the remainder of the 2019/2020 training year is hard to take, and the loss of our summer training program even more so. That said, this does not mean that we’re just going to sit and wait to see what happens next. This has never been our approach and we’re not going to start down that road now. A number of things need to be addressed immediately, like:

  • What happens with Merit Review Boards (MRBs) for Warrant Officer Promotions?
These are still on the table, though they will be conducted virtually.
  • What happens to our Squadron Awards Banquet and the Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR) now?
The actual ceremonies are off of the table, but the awards are still being calculated and tallied. When they’ll be announced/presented is up for some discussion amongst the staff and SSC.
  • What happens to our training year?
All cadets will be marked as having completed their training year. We’re still going to run through a few exercises like the Combined Aviation Subjects review and exam as an optional activity, just because this knowledge is highly recommended for all L3/L4 cadets, especially those who are interested in pilot training next summer.
  • What activities can we participate in while we’re isolating?
That’s still under some discussion, but we’re going to have some answers on this soon. We’ve got our current Anniversary Pin competition underway already and have some more in mind. We may also be able to adapt some activities such as the Aerospace Club to an on-line format. Movie watch parties and gaming guilds are possibilities too. If you have any suggestions or want to run something yourselves, we’re open to input from the cadets and parents as always.

This is our opportunity to come together (virtually) and show leadership by presenting a positive attitude through all of this. This too shall pass. When it does, we all need to be able to look back on this and know that we did something to make it bearable to ourselves and our peers.

We won’t let this situation break us. Like the phoenix in our squadron crest, we will rise from this… immortal.
