CO’s Message

This is the last publication of WROs for calendar year 2020. After our Squadron Annual Mess Dinner on Wednesday, we go into our winter stand-down and won’t be returning to training until 6 Jan 2021. I have never been more glad to see another year put behind us, nor have I been more optimistic about the year ahead. The commitment that each and every one of you (cadets, staff, and SSC volunteers) have made to keeping our squadron going in these adverse times has been an inspiration and I’m very much looking forward to seeing your perseverance rewarded in 2021. It only gets better from here.

This week, we’re suspending our Effective Speaking training for Monday evening. 128 RCACS in Thorold is hosting a special presentation from Capt Christian Stenner, MStJ, CD, FRCGS of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society about the exploration of caves. I’ve already signed up and am really looking forward to his presentation. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s important that you do so in advance so that Capt Copses-Parker at 128 knows how many seats to provision for the Zoom conference.

On Wednesday, we’re conducting our Annual Mess Dinner. Normally, this would be a very memorable in-person formal dinner to mark the end of training for the calendar year. Circumstances have forced us to try to approximate it virtually, but we’re going to do the best that we can. There are two significant considerations this year:

  1. Dinner is being delivered to your home. It is IMPORTANT that you fill in the Virtual Mess Dinner form to indicate your attendance and any dietary restrictions NO LATER THAN 1900 (7:00pm) on Monday, 14 Dec. Failing to do so does not prevent you from attending, but you’ll be on your own for rustling up dinner and you’ll be missing out on early delivery of a special gift too.
  2. Awards and presentations from Training Year 2019-2020 will be presented during the dinner. We didn’t have an ACR and those awards have been waiting too long to be presented. Physical keeper plaques and bursary monies will have to wait until there’s an opportunity to physically present such things.

We’re relaxing the formality of the Mess Dinner as well, considering the medium. We would normally be in 1A (CAF) or C1A (cadets) for a formal event like this, but we’re going to stick to 3C (CAF) and C3F (cadets) for the virtual event.

See you all on Wednesday!

Virtual Mess Dinner

Good afternoon.

We’re planning to host our annual Mess Dinner virtually this year on 16 Dec at 1830 (6:30pm) sharp. Hosting it virtually means that we have a few more logistical hoops to jump through, particularly with respect to dinner itself. If you will be attending the mess dinner, it’s critical that you let us know, provide an address for delivery, and let us know what dietary restrictions you might have, if any.

Summary
Congratulations to newly-promoted WO1 Couroux and his father, newly-enrolled OCdt Couroux! These promotions are the first of a few that we’re looking forward to conferring, so stay tuned.

In traditional form, we’re ending the calendar year in style with the 10th Annual Squadron Mess Dinner at Grace United Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It’s a festive night where we get to learn about RCAF traditions, so it’s training with amazing food and fun at the same time!

We have our effective speaking night on Monday, followed by Wednesday’s Mess Dinner and then we’re done until the second week of January.

On behalf of everyone involved in delivering the cadet program in Niagara-on-the-Lake, I wish you the best of the season, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

809 Squadron’s 9th Annual Mess Dinner has closed out our training for the calendar year. Thanks to our guests, cadets, sponsorship committee, and staff for making it a spectacular one. Special thanks go out to CIs Thiffault and Ruttan. Without both of you, it wouldn’t have come together as memorably as it did.

To 809’s entire family, we wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and the brightest of blessings this season. We’re all looking forward to getting together again in the new year when we resume training on the 8th of January.

Oh, before I forget, thank you, Mrs. Lett, for providing the photo of this year’s •amazing• dessert creation by CI Thiffault.

Level 4 Leadership Presentation

All Level 4’s are reminded to be prepared for their presentation on a leader of their choice.
Please ensure you contact the office tonight if you require any multimedia devices for your presentation (which I hope you do!)

We’re all looking forward to seeing who you’ve chosen and why.
