Notre Dame

In October 2017, cadets, staff, and members of our squadron sponsorship committee took a trip to the UK and France, particularly Vimy Ridge. While we were there, we learned how deeply and personally our history as Canadians is tied to these places.

On our last day, we visited Paris and Notre Dame. We saw Paris’ mourning of Canada’s First World War soldiers immortalized in the stone of the cathedral and were humbled.

Today, it is our turn to mourn Notre Dame herself. We still hope to see her rise again from her ashes, but she will be always be remembered as she was in her glory.

Elora Singers’ Great War Presentation

St. Mark’s Church has been kind enough to donate four (4) tickets to our cadets for the Elora Singers presentation on Saturday at 1930h (7:30pm). Cadets should wear C1 dress and are encouraged to assist the Royal Canadian Legion with their poppy sales for the evening.

Sherkston Shores Sky Fest 2018

There will always be those individuals in the world who think that jumping out of perfectly serviceable aircraft is a good idea. We don’t need to understand these people to respect the courage it takes to actually do it.

99 years ago in 1919, Frank Ellis became the very first person to parachute from an airplane over Canada, Crystal Beach to be specific.

In commemoration of this event, the Sherkston Shores Beach Resort and Campground will be holding Sky Fest 2018, featuring skydiving exhibitions, an appearance by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s WW2-era Douglas DC3 aircraft, and lots of summer activities.

The squadron isn’t doing anything specific for the event, but for those interested in going on their own, details can be found bellow.

Coincidence?

OCdt Couroux was doing some reading last week and discovered another 809 Squadron (nicknamed “Immortals”) from the UK Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. 809 Naval Air Squadron was formed in 1941 and flew in World War II, the Cold War, and the Falklands War before being disbanded in 1982. They flew a number of planes while in service, including the Supermarine Seafire and the Blackburn Bucaneer.

The latest news is that they’re being re-activated and will stand up in 2023 to serve as the Royal Navy’s first F-35B squadron, based at RAF Marham when not deployed aboard one of the new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers.

For those of our cadets who have one foot in the water and an eye to the skies, and you know who you are, we may have a little bit more tie to the seas than we thought.
