CO’s Message

Greetings from the Cadet Youth Development Centre! We’re having a great time and learning a lot. The more we come here, the more envious we are of the facilities and are encouraged to have something similar at home. We’ll have to work on that.

We’re back to regular Drill Team practice and sports on Monday. Wednesday, we have our CO’s Parade and a visit from our Area Elemental Advisor, Maj Lisa Lacombe. We’ll also be welcoming back A/Slt Brauweiler, who has decided to volunteer with us periodically.

CO’s Message

Congratulations to Cpl Vanderberg, who put his best foot forward and represented 809 Squadron this weekend at the Wing 10 Effective Speaking Competition. CV Gowans reported that the competition was close and that everyone came well prepared, so although he won’t be moving on to the regional competition, it’s not through any lack of effort or skill. Well done, Cpl!

Wing 10 ES Competition 2020

We’ve got a busy week ahead, adding next weekend’s aviation exercise at the CYDC to our regular Drill Team practice on Monday and our regular training night on Wednesday.

Full details on the CYDC exercise can be found here: Operations Order – CYDC Aviation Weekend 2020.

CO’s Message

Hopefully, everyone is enjoying the extra time with their families on this Family Day long weekend. As mentioned on last Wednesday’s training night, there will be no optional training on Monday, but we’ll be back to our regular training on Wednesday with our second fitness testing session of the year. Come in comfortable sports attire, prepared to achieve your personal best in the testing. Do not wear your uniforms.

Last week, CV Lett announced the names of the cadets who have yet to bring in their outstanding lottery tickets. You know who you are and we need those tickets back in order for them to be eligible for the draw in April. Bring them with you on Wednesday if you still have them.

The Operations Order for the Aviation FTX in Waterloo will be published before the end of the weekend.

See you on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Congratulations once again to the 809 Newark cadets who participated in the NAG Sports Competition on Saturday. We’re one of the smaller squadrons in the group, so pulling second place overall is a fantastic achievement. Well done!

We’re back to our regular schedule this week, with drill (no sports) all evening on Monday and regular training on Wednesday. There’s a lot of aviation in the schedule this week, which is a great build-up to our aviation and aerospace weekend in Waterloo at the end of the month.

CV Lett has asked me to remind the squadron to bring in their outstanding lottery tickets. We have half of the squadron still holding on to them and they should have been turned in before the end of 2019. Let’s get those returned!

NAG Sports Competition 2020 Update

We are the little squadron that could!

2Lt Nicolescu has reported back that 809 was victorious in European Handball and won second place in the overall competition. Great job to all of the cadets who competed. We’re proud of all of you!

Updated arrival time at 809 HQ is now 1750 (5:50pm), which is a little bit earlier than originally anticipated.

Thank you, 2Lt Nicolescu for supervising today.

Operations Order – NAG Sports Competition 2020

Good news!

It looks like the cadets at 126 Flying Lancers get to be picked up first, so our cadets can sleep in a few more minutes. The bus will be at 809 HQ at 0700 and not at 0630 as previously announced. 809 Newark cadets are to arrive at 809 HQ no later than 0645. We expect the bus to return to 809 HQ at 1900.

As discussed on Wednesday, cadets are to bring their health cards, a reusable water bottle, and something to occupy any free time they might find themselves with. Cadets who do not have their health cards will not be permitted to board the bus. This is a sports competition, so cadets should wear appropriate attire for an active day. 2Lt Nicolescu will be supervising, will have the squadron phone with her, and can be contacted if your cadet needs to be reached.

Capt Durward (CO of 611 Harvard and host of the competition this year) has provided the full operations order below.

Best of luck to all of our teams. I know you’ll do 809 proud!

Winter Warfare Basic – Part 2 – Friday, 31JAN20 – Sunday, 02FEB20

We’ve now completed part 2 of the Winter Warfare Basic course offered by the Lincoln and Welland Regiment.

Soldiers from the Regiment, Cadets and Officers assembled at the Regiment headquarters at the Lake Street Armoury on Friday evening where we prepped for the FTX portion of the course. The trucks were packed and we headed out to our new home for the weekend…..the Winona Rifle Range in Grimsby. We arrived at about 2100hrs and pitched our tents, set up our stoves and lit our lanterns. We then began our evening routine and settled in. For those doing fire picket duty throughout the night, the 0600hrs reveille came early.

At 0600, we struck our tents, packed our gear, ate breakfast and got ready for the day. Practical lessons in pitching/striking tents, over land navigation, pacing, and improvised shelters were conducted. All of this done along side of the troops from the Regiment. The cadets tried IMP’s, the CF version of the infamous MRE. The consensus was that the MRE’s should be ditched for the more preferred IMP

Night time meant sleeping in our lean-to shelters (in the out doors w/ with the occasional snow flake hitting you in the face as you slept). Cadets took turns conducting fire picket. Each group stoked the 8′ long fire and kept the rest of the troops warm. Thanks to those brave souls.

Sunday morning meant tearing down the camp, and putting out fires. We towed the sleds down to the waterfront for a signal fire demonstration. Following this, we headed to the butts of the range, where we went over winter defenses. There was a mouse on hand that showed us just how well they worked. We then raced down to the side of the range (with the sled in tow) where we raced against the Regiment to set up camp, boil water and present Capt Christensen with a hot beverage. The good Captain then instructed us to strike camp & proceed to the entrance of the range where we had to compete again a second time.

After the competition was completed, we put on the snow shoes for one more turn around the range. We then packed up the sleds, had lunch, cleaned up and got on the busses for the return trip to the Armoury. Kit was returned and final comments were made. We all went home tired, but grateful for the experience.

Congratulations to WO2 Gowans and FSgt Abt for completing the course. Hope you had a great time. A big thanks goes out to Capt Christensen and the Regiment for having us out. We’re looking forward to the next outing with the Lincs.
