Weekly Routine Orders – Week of 10 Feb 19

Date
10 Feb 19

RO Number
19-06

Summary

This week’s summary is largely the same as last week’s. The weather may have halted things for a night, but we’re picking up where we left off. Hopefully, everyone managed to stay safe and warm.

Our next few optional training nights will be split between drill team practice from 1900h-2000h (7:00pm-8:00pm) and marksmanship team practice from 2000h-2100h (8:00pm-9:00pm). There will be no optional training on the 18th (Family Day) but we will attempt to find an alternate night that week.

On Wednesday, we’ll once again attempt to hold our local Effective Speaking Competition and have invited the community to attend. Time permitting, there will also be a CO’s Parade at the end of the night.

For those cadets participating in the Effective Speaking Competition, don’t forget to bring your completed competition form with you on Wednesday.

Summary

This Monday night will be split between effective speaking preparation from 1900h-2000h (7:00pm-8:00pm) and drill team practice from 2000h-2100h (8:00pm-9:00pm) for this week, but will switch to Drill Team practice and Marksmanship Team practice beginning next week.

For those cadets participating in next week’s Effective Speaking Competition, Mrs. Gowans has asked me to remind you to bring your completed competition form with you on Wednesday.

In other news, we’re only two weeks out from our Cadet Youth Development Centre aviation weekend! I’m getting excited already and you should be too!

Summary
We’re now in the final week leading up to the Niagara Air Group (NAG) Sports Competition. We’ll be running sports team practice on Monday night from 2000h-2100h (8pm-9pm) following Drill Team practice. We will be taking the entire evening on Wednesday to conduct our Flight Sports Competition and get some extra practice in before the event on Saturday. If there is any cadet who won’t be able to make the Saturday competition, please let me know right away.

National course interviews are coming up on 26 Jan and mock interviews will take place at 1900h (7:00pm) on Tuesday night at 809 HQ.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to pick up bottles after the first weekend of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Ice Wine Festival. If you’re available for next week’s pickup, please don’t hesitate to sign up at the following link: https://809cadets.ca/events/event-sign-ups/.

Cadets who are interested in the Niagara Cadet Winter Gala on 2 Feb 19 at the Lake Street Armoury should bring their money for tickets in on Wednesday evening. Tickets are $25 each. Once again, dress code will be semi-formal or C8 mess dress.

Summary
Thanks to everyone who came out on Saturday and helped to make our winter bottle drive a success! When the squadron and our extended family come together, there’s very little we can’t accomplish. Hopefully, we’ll have some final numbers on funds raised by our regular training night this week.

For the next few Mondays leading up to the Niagara Air Group (NAG) Sports Competition, we’ll be splitting the evening between Drill Team Practice and Sports Practice. We’ve got trophies to keep and we aren’t going to give them up to anyone else without a serious challenge.

Cadets who have applied for national courses need to know that the interviews are coming up on 26 Jan. We’ll arrange for mock interviews for you to practice your presentation before the interviews themselves. Unfortunately, the interviews are in direct conflict with the sports competition, so you won’t be able to make the trip to Cayuga with us that day.

The Niagara-on-the-Lake Ice Wine Festival being held over the next two weekends has generously offered to donate the empty bottles from the event to us, so Mr. Zalepa is looking for a few volunteers on each Sunday to assist with the pickup. If you’re available, sign-up sheets have been posted here: https://809cadets.ca/events/event-sign-ups/.

Lastly, the Niagara Cadet Winter Gala is coming up on 2 Feb 19 at the Lake Street Armoury and tickets ($25 each) will become available in the next couple of weeks. A number of cadets have expressed interest already and it’s shaping up to be an exciting event. I highly recommend attending if you can. Dress code will be semi-formal or C8 mess dress.

Summary
Welcome back! Here’s hoping everyone had a great Christmas and is enjoying what we’ve had so far of the new year.

January isn’t a heavy month, but we have a few upcoming activities.

  • CO’s Parade on the 9th. Let’s make sure everyone gets back into practice and, just as importantly, that everyone’s uniforms still fit properly.
  • Winter Bottle Drive on the 12th. This is one of our mandatory fundraisers and so it’s important that all cadets (and as many parents as possible) are participating.
  • NAG Sports Competition on the 26th. We took away four out of five trophies last year. Let’s see if we can keep them, and maybe add a fifth, this year.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone’s return. Remember, if you know anyone else who you think might benefit from our program, don’t hesitate to invite them out.

Summary
Congratulations to newly-promoted WO1 Couroux and his father, newly-enrolled OCdt Couroux! These promotions are the first of a few that we’re looking forward to conferring, so stay tuned.

In traditional form, we’re ending the calendar year in style with the 10th Annual Squadron Mess Dinner at Grace United Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It’s a festive night where we get to learn about RCAF traditions, so it’s training with amazing food and fun at the same time!

We have our effective speaking night on Monday, followed by Wednesday’s Mess Dinner and then we’re done until the second week of January.

On behalf of everyone involved in delivering the cadet program in Niagara-on-the-Lake, I wish you the best of the season, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

Summary
We had a great showing at Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Santa Claus Parade yesterday. 809 Newark was given the first position in the parade and asked to form a flag party to start things off. We flew the Canadian flag, the Niagara-on-the-Lake town flag, and our own squadron banner as we and Snoopy (“Curse you, Red Baron!”) led the parade through the streets to the tune of “Snoopy’s Christmas” by The Royal Guardsmen. A big thank you goes out to Turkstra Lumber for providing the truck for our display; to Vintage Hotels for the loan of decorations; to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124; to Lt Russell and all supporting members of the staff and sponsorship committee; and our cadets for another successful parade.

Our extra-curricular activities are done for the calendar year and we’re starting to slow things down as we approach our winter stand-down from 20 Dec 18 to 6 Jan 19, but there are still a few things happening:

  • Our effective speaking program will be continuing on Monday nights until 17 Dec.
  • We have a Merit Review Board on 10 Dec for FSgts and WO2s wishing to be considered for promotion.
  • We have our December CO’s Parade on 12 Dec with a few things to announce.
  • We have our formal Squadron Mess Dinner on 19 Dec to end the first part of our training year on a high note.

We’re still looking for new cadets to join our ranks, so if you know anyone who might be interested in what we do as a squadron, bring them out on 12 Dec. It’s a light training night and they get to see some of our pomp and ceremony, too.

Summary
Welcome to December. We’re coming off of two successful weekends of training and fundraising into a month that’s a little more relaxed. We’ve got the Niagara-on-the-Lake Santa Claus Parade this coming weekend, and that’s it for weekend activities for the remainder of the calendar year. On our regular training nights, we have a CO’s Parade on the 12th, and our Annual Squadron Mess Dinner on the 19th before standing down for the later half of the month.

In other good news, our booking at the Cadet Youth Development Centre for 22-24 Feb 19 has been confirmed! This is one of the most exciting activities of our cadet year, where we focus on hands-on aviation and aerospace activities for the entire weekend. This is not something to miss, so make sure you’ve got the weekend cleared.

We’re still looking for new cadets to join our ranks, so if you know anyone who might be interested in what we do as a squadron, December is a great month to invite them out. There is a trophy for top recruiter this year.

Special Notes
Our Area Elemental Advisor (AEA), Maj Lisa LaCombe, will be visiting the unit.
