Weekly Routine Orders – Week of 24 Mar 19

Date
24 Mar 19

RO Number
19-12

Summary

For those of you weren’t at closing parade on Wednesday, we’ve had our first two summer training acceptances! Congratulations to Sgts Abt and Bell on being selected for Advanced Aviation Technology – Aircraft Maintenance and Advanced Aerospace, respectively. Since then, we’ve had four more offers and I’m hoping to have that number climb a bit in the next few days.

As mentioned by OCdt Couroux, Monday night’s Drill Team practice is critical. If you’re on the Drill Team, it’s important that you don’t miss Monday’s practice. It’s make-or-break decision time!

This Saturday is the Wing 10 Effective Speaking Competition in Grimsby. Please join me in sending Cpl Forsyth our best wishes for success as he competes!

Next week is regular training with the addition of our spring Cadet Tag Days at the end of the week. I’ll be sure to have a sign-up sheet posted on the web site by Wednesday.

Summary

Welcome back from what I hope was a relaxing and refreshing March Break. We had a great time at our bowling night with 87 Eagle Squadron last Wednesday and are looking forward to many more opportunities to work with other squadrons in the future.

For the next two Mondays, we’re focusing on drill team practice in anticipation of the competition coming up in April. We’ll stagger that a bit by scheduling something different on the first Monday of April, but we need to get a whole lot more practice in if we want to make a good showing at the competition.

We’re all looking forward to seeing everyone back this week!

Bowling Tomorrow Night in Welland

Good afternoon.

This is just a reminder that we need to present numbers to the folks at 87 squadron for tomorrow night’s bowling. If you’re coming, it’s important that you sign up and indicate that you’ll be there.

Once again, if rides need to be arranged, email 809air@cadets.gc.ca and we’ll get things figured out.

Just in case anyone forgot, there’s no training this week due to March Break. On the other hand, we are getting together with 87 Eagle Squadron in Welland for a night of bowling and pizza on the 13th from 1830 (6:30pm) to 2100 (9:00pm). The location is Jeff’s Bowl-O-Rama at 968 Niagara Street, Welland, ON L3C 1M6. Cadets are responsible for their own transportation but should email if rides need to be coordinated. We’ll be playing two games and pizza/pop will be served.

Summary

I’ve just received the results from the Zone 7 Marksmanship Competition on Saturday. Our team came in 7th out of 14 teams, which is a great showing considering the limited practice time that we had available. Congratulations to everyone on the team! Thanks to CV Carbone, Lt Russell, and Capt Palumbo for helping to bring it all together. Special thanks also go to OCdt Couroux for hauling air rifles from place to place before competition day.

Due to last week’s weather-related cancellation, we’re picking up this week with the same schedule. We’re going to forego the CO’s Parade in March in the interest of getting more training done.

Also, we’re in the last week before March Break and I’m working out a few possible activities for the week. I’ll be speaking with cadets on Monday and Wednesday to determine availability before putting together a final schedule.

Marksmanship Team Practice and Zone 7/8 Competition

Good news, everyone!

After last week’s tryouts, the 809 Marksmanship Team for 2019 has been selected.

Kudos to all of the cadets who competed for a spot on the team and congratulations to the final members!

The team will be practicing with Capt Palumbo and CV Carbone for a full two hours tomorrow night at the Old Virgil School Gym at 1665 Four Mile Creek Road. This practice is exclusively for the team in preparation for the Zone 7/8 competition on Saturday. Members of the Marksmanship Team should arrive at the front doors of the school no later than 1845 (6:45pm) for setup and should be picked up from the same location at 2115 (9:15pm).

The Zone 7/8 Marksmanship Competition will occur at the Lake Street Armoury, 81 Lake Street, St. Catharines on Saturday, 2 Mar from 0800 (8:00am) to 1700 (5:00pm). Parents should drop their cadets off and pick them up from the competition site. Lt Russell will be supervising the team at the event.

Full details for the competition can be found in the operations order here: NGTA Marksmanship Op Order 2019.

Training Cancelled

Sorry for the delay everyone. I got caught up with a conference call and wasn’t able to check the weather promptly at 1630. I’ve since looked at the reports, the radar, and the state of the squadron HQ. The good news is that the snow is beginning to abate. The bad news is we’re rurally located, so there has been no plowing of the roads and no clearance of snow at HQ. In the interest of safety, I’m going to cancel training tonight and we can pick up again next week.

Stay home. Stay warm. Stay safe.

Snowfall Warning and Tonight’s Training

We’re still under a snowfall warning, but we’re not cancelling tonight’s training just yet. If the situation worsens, that may change, so stay tuned. A final call will be made no later than 1630 (4:30pm). Thank you for your patience.

Weekly Routine Orders – Week of 24 Feb 19

Date

Summary

I’m happy to report that we had a successful aviation exercise at the Cadet Youth Development Centre in Waterloo this weekend. We had to cut the trip a few hours short due to weather considerations, but it that didn’t take away from everyone’s education and enjoyment over the weekend.

Captain Palumbo can’t make it out on Monday, so instead of splitting the optional training night between the Drill Tem and the Marksmanship Team, we’re going to do a full two-hour session for the Drill Team. The Marksmanship Team will get a full two-hour session of their own on Thursday night in preparation for the Zone 7/8 Marksmanship Competition on Saturday. We don’t have access to the HQ for this, so we’ll be doing a Throwback Thursday and returning to an old HQ location and using the Old Virgil Public School Gym for the evening.
