October Events

  1. Monday Night Optional Training:

Monday night optional training is now open to all cadets.   This week we’ll be opening up the flight simulator.   OCdt Bell will be working out an activity for 2nd period.   Optional training runs from 1900-2100hrs.    The more cadets we have attending Monday evenings, the more fun it will be.

  1. Fish Fry

The legion is looking for volunteers to take part in service duties for Fish Fry on Thursday nights.    This is not a cadet activity, but you can earn time towards your community service hours for high school decoration.   All interested parties are to reach out to Ms Katleen Kells by email.   Include your phone number, cell phone number she can text to, and any dates that you cannot help out.   Ms Kell’s email is ktkells@gmail.com

  1. Online Ground School (OGS) – Glider and Power

Cadets wishing to apply for either Glider or Power Pilot Training this summer must complete OGS.   This consists of 45 hrs of class work, with the qualifying exam to be completed by the deadline date (15JAN2024).    Deadline for applications is 15NOV2023.    Let squadron staff know if you’re interested, or if you need more information.

  1. Exercise Niagara Challenger Field Training Exercise (FTX)

We are having a Niagara Region wide FTX on the weekend of Oct 13-15.   This is large activity with cadets participating from Air, Army and Sea units throughout Niagara.    We’ll be sleeping in tents and taking part in survival activities.  We’ll need a head count for this, so please let squadron staff know this Wednesday if you plan to attend.    It’s a fantastic exercise and lots of fun.   Don’t pass this one up.

  1. Trunk or Treat

On Sunday, October 29, 809 Squadron has been invited to take part in Central Community Centre’s Trunk or Treat.    It’s an opportunity for the squadron to showcase itself at a community event, and hopefully attract some new recruits.   More info to follow as we get closer to the date.

September Events

 

  1. Monday Night NCO Training:

 

All Monday night activities for the month of September will be geared towards senior NCO development.    As a complement to the Level 4 training being offered this Saturday by the NGTA, we will be going over classroom instruction, drill instruction and leadership skills.    All level 4’s and 5’s are to attend.    All other levels are not required for this training and have Monday nights off until October.

 

  1. Fish Fry

 

The legion is looking for volunteers to take part in service duties for Fish Fry on Thursday nights.    This is not a cadet activity, but you can earn time towards your community service hours for high school decoration.   All interested parties are to reach out to Ms Katleen Kells by email.   Include your phone number, cell phone number she can text to, and any dates that you cannot help out.   Ms Kell’s email is ktkells@gmail.com

 

  1. Glider Sign Up

 

Gliding is due to take part this upcoming Sunday.  The location has been changed to the Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport, located at 435 River Rd, Fenwick, ON.      Be at 87 Squadron’s headquarters no later that 0845.   Pick up afterwards will be approximately 1215hrs.   Wear appropriate civilian attire based on the weather conditions.   Bring a water bottle with you.    Note, there are no washroom facilities once you get out on the airfield.  Also keep in mind that you’ll be exposed to wind/weather when out at the location as well, so please dress appropriately. We need a head count, so please let us know on Wednesday at the squadron and/or email with your intention to attend.   Once you give us your commitment, we do expect you to attend the activity.

Weekly Routine Orders (WROs) 2022/23-35 – Week 35 – 21 May 2023 (Update)

There is an update to this week’s Weekly Routine Orders that focuses specifically on CJCR Dress Regulations for Ceremonial Occasions. The original WROs have been updated to reflect the change. The specific addition follows and needs to be carefully considered when wearing C1A orders of dress.

CJCR Dress instructions – Section 2 – Appearance – Specific Guidance for Ceremonial Occasions (2-2-18)


  1. Ceremonial order of dress (C1) shall only be ordered for specific occasions (CO’s parade, Formal parades, ACRs, etc.) C1 shall not be the standard training dress at a corps/squadron. The following amplification is provided for all cadets when in C1 order of dress:
    1. footwear will be worn as per environment / regiments / branches and corps / squadron dress instructions;
    2. over garment will be worn as per environments / regiments / branches and corps / squadron dress instructions. Medals are not to be worn on over garment (parka, gabardine, windbreaker);
    3. hair that extends below the tunic jacket collar shall be secured in one of the following styles:
      1. in a bun;
      2. a single braid;
      3. double braids centred to the back;
      4. multi braids or locks, be pulled back to the centre of the back or equally positioned along the shoulder blades and secured; or
      5. when hairstyle or hair type does not allow a cadet to adopt one of the aforementioned hairstyles, the cadet must discuss with the Chain of Command to find a hairstyle that can be secured accordingly.
    4. Jewellery;
      1. Rings, a maximum of two rings which are not of costume jewellery nature. Additional rings may only be worn when they indicate professional standing, such as an engineer, or are worn with a wedding band as a single set indicating betrothal or fidelity, e.g., an engagement or an anniversary ring. Rings shall not inhibit the execution of proper arms drill or cause an unsightly bulge in white or black gloves.
      2. Necklaces and bracelets shall not be visible;
      3. Piercings. The only piercings authorized are single or single set of stud or single stone earrings (one in each ear) are permitted in the ear lobe(s). These earrings shall not exceed one centimetre square or diameter. Gauges / spacers shall not exceed 2.5 cm in diameter; and
      4. Plain tie-pins or clips or with a Canadian military/Cadet insignia are permitted.
    5. Facial make-up, temporary lashes, and eyelashes extensions are permitted; and
    6. Coloured nail polish and artificial nails are permitted as long as they do not impair the cadet’s ability to perform their duties.

And finally, the Wonderland trip for Cadet Day is on this Saturday.
