CO’s Message

Another week has gone by and I hope everyone is managing to stay upbeat despite the physical isolation. It’s not an easy task, I’m confident that each of you is showing leadership and setting a good example for your peers and our community.

Updates have come down from the National Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers Support Group that the cadet program will remain suspended until at least 30 Apr 2020. This is somewhat disappointing, but understandable and entirely necessary if we’re to ensure that COVID-19 is going to be controlled. As a result, there will be no training nights or supplemental in-person cadet activities for the month of April. We’re looking into options for finishing out our year properly if this becomes extended into May and will keep you informed as we know more.

Last week, I put out a survey to see how many cadets have the ability to participate in on-line training. To date, we’ve had seven (7) responses. This is a good beginning, but I don’t want to go down the path of developing something unless I’m certain that a majority of the unit can participate. If you haven’t replied yet, please do so as soon as you can.

Looking forward to seeing everyone either on-line or when the current situation passes.

CO’s Message

We’re one week into our three-week extended March Break and suspension of the cadet program nationwide. I hope everyone is doing well and taking all necessary precautions in order to stay healthy and avoid spreading infection to others. It’s a trying time for everyone, but each of you has shown that you have the self-discipline to weather this and serve as good examples to others.

We’re still on track for our program to resume during the week of 5 Apr 2020, but expect to have a number of factors to consider before we can safely do so. I don’t have any current updates from our chain of command, but will ensure that these get out to everyone as soon as I receive them.

In the event that the date for resuming training is pushed out, we’re exploring other options. One of these is use of Google Classroom to deliver at least some of our training on-line. This isn’t really workable unless a significant number of you have the necessary computer access to make this work. I’ve added a survey below to get a feel for whether this is feasible or not. Please fill it in at your earliest opportunity.

We’re still looking for submissions for our 50th Anniversary Pin, so if you’re artistically inclined that’s a great use for any spare time you might find that you have. The deadline may be pushed out a bit, but the contest is still on!

COVID-19 Follow-Up

Good afternoon.

The COVID-19 concerns have reached the point where our National Commander, Brigadier General Cochrane, has ordered a suspension of the entire cadet program throughout the country for the next three weeks. The full text of his decision can be found below.

This cancels the social night that was proposed for next week and all mandatory and optional training up to 3 April 2020. Pending further development, we’ll be back for optional training night on 6 April 2020.

In the meantime, stay home and stay safe. Updates will be sent periodically over the next three weeks as more information becomes available.

CADET PROGRAM CANCELLATION (3 WEEKS)

In response to developments in the outbreak of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Natl CJCR Sp Gp has CANCELLED ALL CADET ACTIVITIES, including local training, for three weeks effective immediately. Prior to Friday, April 03, 2020, further direction will be provided, including the potential for this cancellation to be extended.
The National Cadet and Junior Canadian Rangers Support Group (Natl CJCR Sp Gp) has been directed to adopt an aggressive posture to minimize personnel risk of exposure and to prevent the CAF and cadets from becoming a transmission vector. As such, CANCDTGEN 010/20 was released on March 12, 2020 issuing amplifying direction related to the execution of Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger (JCR) activities, and preventative measures to better protect CAF members, cadets and JCRs and their families from COVID-19.
The safety and welfare of all who participate in our programs is always our top priority, as such we take very seriously our responsibility to protect cadets from any real or apparent health or safety concern.
The Natl CJCR Sp Gp is collaborating with Department of National Defence and CAF as well as with other federal departments in order to maintain proper situational awareness on the COVID-19 situation in Canada and globally to synchronize interdepartmental response under the lead of Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada. As a result, the situation is continuously being monitored and decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

COVID-19 Response

As I’m sure you’re already aware, there have been a number of precautionary measures put in place to ensure that COVID-19 does not spread uncontrollably through the population.

The cadet program, being mindful of the well-being of our cadets, is taking similar measures. At present, this means that we are still conducting our mandatory and optional training nights, but most other activities have been suspended.

For the moment, this means that senior cadets who have been participating in C7 familiarization should NOT attend the SAT session at the Lake Street Armoury. This has been postponed to a later date to be determined.

We’re expecting to receive further clarification on local activities tomorrow. Once we have that, we’ll put together an update on how that affects our upcoming training nights.

We’re down to our last training week before March Break.

Drill and Sports will be on Monday, as usual, followed by our regular training night on Wednesday.

The announcement has already gone out for our 50th Anniversary pin competition and we’re looking forward to the exciting ideas our cadets will be putting forward. There will be prizes!

March Break activities are low-key this year. We’re looking at the possibility of a board game night and possibly a movie night on the nights that we would normally be doing optional and regular training. Cadets will be polled on Wednesday for availability and interest.

Senior cadets who are eligible for C7 training with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment will be meeting OCdt Couroux at the Lake Street Armoury for training from 1730-2200 (5:30pm-10:00pm). This will be followed up by the SAT simulation range at the Lake Street Armoury from 0830-1630 (8:30am to 4:30pm) with 2lt Nicolescu. Arrive no later than 15 minutes before training in both cases. Arrive already fed on Monday and bring a packed lunch on Saturday.

Anniversary Pin Competition

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of 809 Newark Squadron and the 80th anniversary of the Air Cadet program in Canada. There will be a number of observations throughout the year, culminating with the mass Annual Ceremonial Review ceremony for all nine Niagara squadrons on 5 Jun 2021.

One of the first things we’ll be doing is submitting a design for an anniversary pin to be worn on cadet uniforms, the guidelines for which can be found below:

Commemorative Pins

Per the “Commemorative Pins” section on page 3-4-1 of the CJCR Dress Instructions of 2019.

Submissions and recommendations on commemorative pins including the wear of pins shall be formally presented to the Clothing and Dress Committee by the Regional CWOs through the chain of command. They are to be produced at no cost to the public to commemorate special occasions such as the anniversary of a corps, squadron, CTC or particular activities.
Commemorative pins can only be worn on the left pocket of the shirt or jacket, as illustrated at Annex I.
Corps or squadron anniversary. The corps or squadron anniversary pins are worn for a one (1) year period in which the anniversary is celebrated. They are not worn at the CTC and are to be worn on the jacket only.

Competition

Cadets who are interested in submitting a pin design for the squadron’s 50th anniversary should do so no later than the 15 April 2020 training night. This will give us approximately one month to choose a design, submit it to Comd Natl CJCR Sp Gp for approval and receive a response.

The final design will be unveiled at the Annual Ceremonial Review on 30 May 2020. An order will then be placed for 2.5cm x 2.5cm metal pins to be distributed in September for wear during the 2020-2021 training year.

Greetings from the Cadet Youth Development Centre! We’re having a great time and learning a lot. The more we come here, the more envious we are of the facilities and are encouraged to have something similar at home. We’ll have to work on that.

We’re back to regular Drill Team practice and sports on Monday. Wednesday, we have our CO’s Parade and a visit from our Area Elemental Advisor, Maj Lisa Lacombe. We’ll also be welcoming back A/Slt Brauweiler, who has decided to volunteer with us periodically.

Congratulations to Cpl Vanderberg, who put his best foot forward and represented 809 Squadron this weekend at the Wing 10 Effective Speaking Competition. CV Gowans reported that the competition was close and that everyone came well prepared, so although he won’t be moving on to the regional competition, it’s not through any lack of effort or skill. Well done, Cpl!

Operations Order: An Air Raising Experience 2020

Situation
1. The cadets and staff of 809 Squadron will participate in the Cadet Youth Development Centre’s “Introduction to Aerospace Through Simulation” training program during the weekend of 28 Feb – 1 Mar 2020.
Mission
1. To build upon and enhance the level training for aviation, aerospace and aerodrome operations.
Execution
1. The cadets will commence training on Fri 28 Feb 2020 at 2000h at the Cadet Youth Development Centre in Breslau, ON. They will complete training on Sun 1 Mar 2020 at 1630h. For a detailed itinerary please see Annex A.
2. The exercise will be conducted in four phases as follows:
  1. Phase 1 – Planning
  2. Phase 2 – Paperwork submitted to 809 CO for approval
  3. Phase 3 – Paperwork submitted to Area Office (NGTA)
3. The exercise will be conducted in four phases as follows:

    1. Scheduling and exercise layout

  2. Phase 2 – Advance Preparation

  4. Phase 4 – Tear Down and Departure
    1. All training staff will continue to follow Annex A for tear down
    2. All supplementary orders will come through the OPI or designate

4. Accommodations
  1. Accommodations will be in the CYDC’s open floor area and/or classrooms.
5. Emergency Action Plan
  1. In case of an emergency all actions will be directed through the Officer Staff and OPI
  2. The unit’s mobile phone (905-468-7584) will be available for emergency use during the activity
  3. Parents and guardians can contact their cadets via the unit’s mobile phone for urgent matters
  4. All cadet home phone contact numbers will be kept with the Supervising Officer at all times
6. Safety/First Aid
  1. For any minor incidents, the First Aid Officer for the exercise is 2Lt Nicolescu. She will be in possession of a First Aid kit.
  2. For major incidents the local Ambulance/Hospital will be notified. Cadets must be in possession of an Ontario Health Benefits card at all times, as well as any medical alert information, asthma inhalers, and/or epipen kits. The route to the closest Emergency Room is outlined in Annex D.
  3. In the event that a Cadet or Officer is hospitalized, the parent/guardian/next of kin will be notified immediately via the emergency contact phone numbers. Any further action required will be determined at that point in time. The Area Office will be contacted at the earliest convenient opportunity.

Annex B – Kit List

All cadets should be in possession of the following clothing and equipment in order to ensure a safe, productive, and enjoyable training exercise:
1. Health Card;
2. Appropriate Outdoor Coat or Cadet Parka with Liner;
3. Winter Gloves;
4. Toque;
5. Winter Boots;
6. Shirts (2 minimum);
7. Socks (4 pair minimum);
8. Underwear (2 pair minimum);
9. Pyjamas;
10. Pants (i.e. khakis, jeans [no rips or holes]);
11. Running shoes (indoor and outdoor);
12. Personal Hygiene Kit. (tooth brush, tooth paste, &c);
13. Plastic Bag (for dirty laundry);
14. Air Mattress (with pump);
15. Sleeping Bag and Pillow; and
16. Prescription Medication  (Bring ONLY enough for the weekend;  notify officer staff immediately upon arrival.)
Cadets MAY bring personal electronics such as digital cameras and music players (with headphones) but these are discouraged and are brought entirely at the cadet’s own risk. Neither the trip staff nor the squadron will be responsible should such items go missing.
Cadets are NOT to bring the following:
1. Any Item Deemed to be a Potential Weapon (i.e. Knives);
2. Illegal or Controlled Substances (i.e. Alcohol, Drugs, Tobacco); or
3. Pornographic material.
Any and all prescription medication will be turned in to the OIC upon arrival to the Squadron HQ. Health cards and will be collected upon arrival and returned at the end of the exercise.

Hopefully, everyone is enjoying the extra time with their families on this Family Day long weekend. As mentioned on last Wednesday’s training night, there will be no optional training on Monday, but we’ll be back to our regular training on Wednesday with our second fitness testing session of the year. Come in comfortable sports attire, prepared to achieve your personal best in the testing. Do not wear your uniforms.

Last week, CV Lett announced the names of the cadets who have yet to bring in their outstanding lottery tickets. You know who you are and we need those tickets back in order for them to be eligible for the draw in April. Bring them with you on Wednesday if you still have them.

The Operations Order for the Aviation FTX in Waterloo will be published before the end of the weekend.
