Good evening and welcome back from April (?) Break!

We had hopes before we broke from training that perhaps the COVID-19 situation might improve, but we’re not quite there yet. We’ll keep going as we have, but will be holding a special “What To Do To Maintain Cadet Mental Health During Isolation” training night on Wednesday to address some of the scenarios that we’ve all found ourselves dealing with.

In the meantime, Aerospace Club is still a go at 1900 on Monday with WO2 Bell. Next week, we’re looking to participate in a special session from 438 Tactical Helicopter squadron, learning about the team that supports the Canadian Armed Forces’ CH-146 Griffon helicopters. That’s definitely not an event to be missed!

Summer training applications close at the end of April, so if you haven’t sent in your choices for summer training, don’t delay. Get that done as soon as possible!

Good morning!

Please accept my apology for getting this week’s WROs out late. Hopefully, OCdt Couroux’s new “DCO’s Corner” posting provided some food for thought in the meantime. We can expect to see more information from him each week going forward.

Congratulations once again to LAC Yuditskaya for placing first in our Effective Speaking Competition last week. One of the judges commented that her impromptu speech was one of the best they had ever heard. Well done! All of the cadets who were involved in our Effective Speaking program should be congratulated for their dedication. It’s not an easy thing to do at the best of times and working it virtually adds yet another layer of difficulty. Thanks once again to CV Gowans for all her hard work running the program this year and for her patience with the various technological hurdles that presented themselves. Lastly, a big “Thank You!” goes out to our Mrs. Lapointe, Mrs. Mehrotra, Mrs. Taylor-Roehm, Maj (Retired) Kempston, and 2Lt Nicolescu for all of your supporting effort during the competition.

The official word from the Government of Ontario has indicated that next week’s April Break is still a go, so we won’t be conducting training during this period. There is a virtual program running for all cadets called the Cadet Activity Program. I’ll be getting more information on the details this evening and will pass that on as soon as I have it for you.

Regular training will be on Wednesday night as usual. See you then!

Good afternoon.

Monday night is our Effective Speaking Competition. Thanks to CV Gowans for all of her help preparing the cadets for this evening. Thanks also to Mrs. Taylor-Roehm, Mrs. Mehrotra, Mrs. Lapointe, and 2Lt Nicolescu who will be serving as judges and teller. The usual Google Meet will be used for participating cadets to gather out of sight of the judges and the general public. All others will use a separate Meet that has been set up for the event itself. We’re looking forward to seeing some compelling presentations!

The current COVID-19 situation has unfortunately caused in-person summer training to be cancelled. I’ve already spoken to each of the cadets who are affected by this and have discussed the situation with them personally. In the hopes of in-person training being a possibility over the next few months, we’ll be looking into what we can do as a unit to compensate for this. More information will be coming as we have it.

This week, at WO2 Abt’s request, Monday’s cooking class is being moved to 1800-1900 instead of 2000-2100 in order to correspond with most cadets’ dinner hours. Remember to join the Meet an hour before the Effective Speaking Competition rather than after.

Next week, with the effective speaking program being ended, clubs will begin at 1900 rather than at 2000.

Good morning.

Niagara’s still in the red COVID-19 zone, so virtual training remains our standard. We’re seeing some encouraging news from other regions, where dropping infection levels are bringing them down to orange and yellow zones, but all we can do at this point is wait patiently, keep safe, and be responsible with our approach to public interaction. This too shall pass.

We’re having one more practice night for Effective Speaking before the competition on the 29th, so if there’s any more polishing that needs doing, definitely take this opportunity to work with CV Gowans to address that. We’re looking forward to what you have to show us on the 29th.

Monday evening after Effective Speaking is Radio Club hosted by Sgt Forsyth. I understand all of the radios were passed out this weekend, so everything should be in order. If you’ve somehow been missed, contact OCdt Couroux to see what can be done.

I’ll be away all this week, so OCdt Couroux will be in charge until I get back. Enjoy your training and I’ll see you all next week.

Good morning.

We’re still in a holding pattern with respect to COVID-19, but we’ll update you with further information as we have it.

Plans for Monday evening’s Effective Speaking competition have been pushed out by two weeks, so we’ll be holding the competition on the 29th of March instead of the 15th in order to give our candidates some more time to prepare. The Effective Speaking sessions will still be running in at their regular times up to the competition itself.

After Effective Speaking on Monday, WO2 Bell will be leading the Aerospace Club to test some of the principles of rocketry with plastic pop bottles. If you’re participating, make sure you have a two-litre plastic pop bottle (cap removed), construction paper, scissors, glue, tape, and any other crafting items you think you might need to personalize your rocket.

Good morning.

We’re still in COVID-19 red status as a region, so training remains virtual for now. New announcements from the Government of Ontario are bearing hopeful news. With the recent approvals of the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, the Province hopes to have everyone vaccinated by the end of June. Fingers crossed for a regular training year in 2021/22!

We’re still waiting for details on the March (April?) Break Cadet Activity Program. We do know that the activities will be conducted virtually and will require no sign-up from cadets, but that’s all for now. More information will be posted as we have it.

FSgt Lampman, WO2 Abt, and WO2 Bell sat Merit Review Boards for promotion this past weekend (despite my missing the fact that a password was required for the session) and we’re still waiting on the results of those.

Monday night has CV Gowans’ Effective Speaking class at 1900, followed by WO2 Abt’s Cooking Club at 2000.

Good afternoon!

Progress! Niagara Region has moved from lockdown to red status. This isn’t enough for us to move into in-person training, but it’s a step in the right direction. If we can keep our numbers down over the next few weeks, we may be able to end our training year with some actual hands-on activities.

Monday night has CV Gowans’ Effective Speaking class at 1900. At 2000, the Radio Club will be going into some emergency preparedness with Sgt Forsyth. Over the next little bit, he’ll be programming the radios and for distribution to participating cadets.

Good afternoon!

I hope everyone’s had a great week and is ready for another! We’re back to regular activities on Monday (Effective Speaking and Aerospace Club) and regular training on Wednesday.

We’re having all of our uniform points clawed back on 26 Feb 2021, so we need to have new orders placed before this happens. All cadets need to re-measure themselves before our regular training night on Wednesday and submit their information using our on-line forms, which are linked below. We’ll compare these against existing records and place the necessary orders.

There’s still no change on our region’s lockdown status, but the numbers appear to be going down, so we’ll keep you posted as we know more.
