Niagara On The Lake Annual Christmas Parade – Saturday, December 10, 1000hrs

Good afternoon 809,

This year marks the 1st time since 2019 that we’ve been able to take part in the annual Niagara-On-The-Lake Christmas parade. Although not a mandatory event, we encourage maximum participation as this is an opportunity for the public to see us, something that doesn’t happen regularly.

Here are the particulars:
Where – 124 Branch Royal Canadian Legion – 410 King St, NOTL
When – 1000hrs until approx 1200hrs
OIC – Capt Lemoine
Dress – C3’s w/ Parka & Liner, gloves & wedge (bring toque with you just-in-case of cold weather)

Note: some cadets have expressed problems with their shirt and tie after the downpour back on Remembrance Day. If your shirt is not presentable, C3D would be acceptable (crewneck sweater instead of shirt and tie).

Annual Mess Dinner – Wednesday, December 21 – Cadet Sign Up

Good afternoon, 809,

On Wednesday, December 21, we’ll be having our first in-person formal mess dinner since 2019. This is a night of RCAF tradition, and gives you the opportunity to be social with your fellow cadets. In the RCAF, mess dinners are considered to be a parade, so that means mandatory attendance is required. In saying that, we do want you to sign up in advance. The link for the sign up sheet is below:

Parent Sign Up – Mess Dinner Assistance – Wednesday, December 21, 2022

Our annual mess dinner is coming up on December 21. It’s a celebration in Military Style, giving our cadets an opportunity to experience RCAF tradition and enable them to interact in a social setting prior to our Christmas break. Even though it centers around training and tradition, this has been an effort on behalf of the entire squadron. The staff looks after the program, the SSC looks after most of the preparations as far as the venue and the food, along with the logistics of how it works behind the scenes. Parents have helped out as servers during the dinner. It’s for this that we’re looking for your help. So, Parents/Guardians, we asking for your help to make this a success. Please sign up to show your availability and desire to help us out with this annual tradition. If you find that all the spots are filled up and you’d still like to help, please let us know.

CO’s Message

Remembrance Day, 2022

Well, this is possibly the busiest week we’re going to have for a while.    Monday night’s optional training will include Effective Speaking (1st period) followed by Aviation (2nd period).  Wednesday night’s classes are all cancelled and will be replaced with Drill, followed by a CO’s Parade.  With Remembrance Day coming up, we need to get the squadron’s marching skills polished up and make sure uniforms are presentable.   Then, on Thursday night, we do our overnighter at the legion, the 1st in a few years, to get prepped for Remembrance Day.    Then finally, the vigil at the cenotaph, followed by 2 Remembrance Day ceremonies.  Let’s get started.

It’s no longer a requirement for you to fill out and post a declaration. The link for this will no longer be provided.

Social distancing will still be practiced as much as possible. Also, it’s encouraged that we do as much training as possible outside.

  1. National Online Ground School

The application deadline for the Air Cadet Online Ground School for this summer’s Glider and Power Pilot Training Courses has been extended to 15 November.   Please see Capt Lemoine if you’d like to apply.

  1. Cadet Co-op (High School Credit Program)

The Training Year Cadet Co-op is starting back up once again in partnership between UCDSB and RCSU Central.

To be eligible a cadet must:

-Attend High School in Ontario
-Reside in Ontario
-Be a current cadet

There is one misconception that has come up over the years:

-Cadets must be a student from UCDSB- Incorrect
-The program is a ministry of education program, coordinated on behalf of the ministry through UCDSB. As long as the cadet is a student of any school board in Ontario (French, English, Public, Catholic, or even Private) they are eligible as the credit is linked to their OEN (Ontario Education Number)

Cadets can earn up to 4 credits through the training year version of cadet co-op. It takes 90 hours of cadet activities (Training, team practices, uniform prep, lesson prep, etc) to earn a credit, as well as completion of the pre-placement assignments, tracking their hours on a log sheet, and participating in your ACR. Why not earn some high school credits for what they are already doing!

If you’re interested, please see Capt Lemoine for more information, including the application and a FAQ sheet.

Remembrance Day Sleepover, Vigil, and Parades – 10NOV22-11NOV22

This is the kickoff for our annual Remembrance Day Vigil. On Thursday, 10 Nov 2022 at 1900 (7:00pm), cadets will meet at the Royal Canadian Legion’s Ed Boldt Memorial Hall (upstairs) and begin preparations for Remembrance Day on Friday.

Bring your uniform (on a hanger) and your boots; pajamas; a sleeping bag and pillow; toiletries; and any other essential items for a sleepover.

Dress for the Thursday evening portion is casual. Jeans and a t-shirt are fine. Dress for the Friday parades is full dress uniform: C1A. The early forecasts are calling for rain and 15deg.   The outside shell of the parka may be required to keep the cadets dry.

Breakfast will be provided by the Squadron Sponsorship Committee through donations by our cadets’ families. Please accept our sincere thanks if you are contributing to our breakfast. Please see the Remembrance Day Breakfast Contributions sign-up sheet and bring the items with you when you arrive on Thursday night.

The sign-up sheet for Remembrance Day breakfast contributions can be found here: Event Sign-ups. Please remember that you need to be logged into the site to see the sign-up sheets.

Remembrance Day occurs on a weekday this year, so a letter has been provided for cadets to take to their schools to explain their absence from classes. It can be found here: Remembrance Day Letter.

Our schedule for Remembrance Day is as follows:

0600 – Reveille (First Group)
0620 – Breakfast (First Group)
0645 – Walk to Cenotaph (First Group)
0700 – Shifts begin
1000 – Last shift at the Cenotaph
1030 – Old Town parade begins
1200 – Old Town parade ends and cadets return to the Royal Canadian Legion
1230 – Cadets are to proceed to Queenston for the afternoon parade
1300 – Queenston parade begins
1430 – Queenston parade ends and cadets return to the Royal Canadian Legion
1500 – Cadets are ready for pickup at the Royal Canadian Legion

Shifts last for 30 mins each with five (5) cadets per shift.

Changeovers will occur at the top and bottom of each hour until the last shift takes position at 1030. This shift will remain for the duration of the Remembrance Day parade.

We have no transportation laid on to get our cadets from Old Town to Queenston and back for the different ceremonies.   We’re looking for available SSC members and parents to help out if possible.

Thank you to all who contribute to making this event successful. The Remembrance Day parades are where we have an opportunity for cadets, staff, and volunteers to show our respect for our fallen and, through them, our community.
