CO’s Message

We’re now well into Remembrance season and so the poppy is a mandatory part of the cadet uniform until the end of Remembrance Day ceremonies on 11 Nov. Details on positioning can be found in the Dress Instructions at Chapter 4, Annex A.

On Friday, we have our Autumn FTX at Camp Wetaskiwin. The full operations order and annexes (kit lists, maps, &c) for this event will be provided this morning. It’s a fun and educational weekend and I’m really excited to see that every one of our cadets is going to be able to make it out.

In two weeks, we have our annual Remembrance Day Sleepover, Vigil, and Parades. Further details for these activities will be forthcoming this week.

CO’s Message

Hopefully, everyone is sufficiently recovered from Thanksgiving. We’re back to our regular schedule this week with optional training on Monday and mandatory training on Wednesday.

If you’re a new cadet and you haven’t been sized for your uniform yet, come out on Monday night to make sure that gets done. If you really can’t make it out on Monday for this, let us know and we’ll make time on Wednesday. We want to make sure that all cadets are in full uniform before Remembrance Day.

On the topic of Remembrance Day, the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Campaign begins this coming weekend. Further details on volunteering to support this activity and gain some volunteer hours at the same time will be available this Wednesday. Remember, once the Poppy Campaign begins on 25 Oct, the poppy is a mandatory part of the cadet uniform until the end of Remembrance Day Ceremonies on the 11 Nov. Details on positioning can be found in the Dress Instructions at Chapter 4, Annex A.

We’re only two weeks out from out Autumn FTX at Camp Wetaskiwin and three weeks from our Remembrance Day Sleepover, Vigil, and Parades. We’ll have further details on both of these activities published over the next few days.

CO’s Message

Greetings from Kilkenny, Ireland! I won’t be around this week at our regular training night, but Lt Russell and the rest of the staff have things well in hand.

As you’re already aware, there won’t be any Monday night training this week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Stay home and enjoy time with your family.

Wednesday night is our first fitness testing night of the training year. There will be no uniforms worn on Wednesday. Come out in sports attire and be prepared to do your best.

Once again, remember that Wednesday evening’s Regular Training Night is mandatory for cadets to attend. If a cadet cannot attend, it is essential that they report their absence before training begins for the evening. Call or text the squadron phone at (905) 468-7584 or email 809air@cadets.gc.ca to report.

I will be returning to Canada on the 20th and will be back to cadets next Monday night. Until then, please escalate any concerns to Lt Russell either personally or via email to matthew.russell@cadets.gc.ca as necessary.

CO’s Message

We’re coming off of a busy weekend. We’ve had success with our Cadet Tag Days event, both in raising needed funds for our activities and in increasing awareness of our program in the community. Unfortunately, our Gliding Familiarization Day wasn’t as successful due to two factors. One of these was the weather, which we have no real control over. The other was a communications breakdown, which should not have occurred. Once again, I apologize for inconveniencing everyone. I’ve already had some helpful correspondence with the Gliding Centre commander and am confident that we can avoid this happening again. I’m also looking into options for our newer cadets to get in on a different gliding session with another squadron so that they don’t miss out on the experience. More information will be posted as soon as I have it.

As discussed last week, we’re doing Drill Team practice from 1900-2000 (7:00pm-8:00pm) and sports from 2000-2100 (8:00pm-9:00pm) for our Optional Training Night on Monday.

Remember that Wednesday evening’s Regular Training Night is mandatory for cadets to attend. If a cadet cannot attend, it is essential that they report their absence before training begins for the evening. Call or text the squadron phone at (905) 468-7584 or email 809air@cadets.gc.ca to report.

From 10-20 Oct 19, I will be out of the country. During my absence, please escalate any concerns to Lt Russell either personally or via email to matthew.russell@cadets.gc.ca as necessary.

Lastly, there will be no Optional Training Night on 14 Oct 19. Stay home and enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend. We’ll be back on the Wednesday following.

This Morning’s Gliding

Good morning.

This morning’s gliding session was cancelled last night without our knowledge. We had taken a gliding spot from another squadron that couldn’t attend, but the gliding centre’s contact list had not been updated. As a result, the cancellation notification was sent to the squadron with the initial booking and not to us. Please accept my apology for inconveniencing you with an unproductive trip to Welland and also my assurance that lines of communication will be better established for future events.

Gliding Update

Good evening.

Due to some pressing family circumstances, I will not be supervising tomorrow’s gliding in Welland. Lt Russell has kindly offered to take over supervision, so we’re still on… weather permitting. Still, continue to check the site for updates and/or cancellations based on weather. With luck, we’ll have a good gliding day!

Gliding on Sunday

For those cadets who signed up for gliding this Sunday at the Niagara Central Airport in Welland, we begin at 0900 (9:00am) and cadets should arrive at the 87 Eagle Squadron hangar no later than 0845 (8:45am) for a prompt start. I will be supervising.

Due to registration restrictions for cadet activities, only the following cadets have been authorized to participate. If your name is not on the list, we will make every effort to get you another opportunity as soon as possible.

(Cadet attendance lists are displayed only to logged in users. Please login for full details.)

Gliding is weather dependent and the forecast is calling for rain tomorrow, so stay tuned to the web site for possible cancellations!

Aerospace Club

Good afternoon.

FSgt Bell has asked that I post this on his behalf:

“Good afternoon, Cadets

There is a possibility of Aerospace Club being held if enough people are willing to attend it. If you are interested in attending, please sign up on this sign up sheet, which can be found at Event Sign-Ups

More information will be given at a later date about the club.”

We have had a lot of interest in the Aerospace Club in previous years, so if you have an interest in space, this is the place to be.

Space!

CO’s Message

This week, we’re repeating our optional training night schedule of Drill Team practice from 1900-2000 and sports from 2000-2100.

Wednesday is our first CO’s Parade of the year. For those who are unfamiliar with this, it is an opportunity for cadets to practice a full ceremonial parade and march-past. These are usually done monthly and sometimes involve a significant member of the community to serve as the Reviewing Officer (RO) of the parade. This month, being our first of the training year, we’ll keep a bit lower key and forego the community Reviewing Officer.

We also have our Cadet Tag Days fundraiser. Every cadet needs to sign up for two shifts for the weekend. Those who sign up for both shifts on Saturday will have lunch provided. Sign-up sheets can be found here: https://809cadets.ca/events/event-sign-ups/.

Lastly, we may have an opportunity to have another gliding familiarization day this weekend. If all goes well, we’ll have 20 spots and can take most of our cadets up. Preference goes to newer cadets and those who haven’t had a familiarization flight before, in that order. That said, we’ll likely have enough spots for almost everyone, so sign up! I’ll confirm 100% by Wednesday evening at the latest.

Remember that you need to be logged into the web site to see the sign-up sheets.

Updated Dress Instructions

Good morning.

Updated Dress Instructions have been posted and are available here: Dress Instructions. There aren’t many changes to how the uniform is worn, but the numbered orders of dress have been completely reworked. For your reference, a cheat-sheet has also been posted here: Numbered Orders of Dress (2019). We will be adhering to the new dress instructions as of today and will be using the new numbered orders in all further communications, so it’s important to become familiar with them.
