Weekly Routine Orders – Week of 19 December 2021

Date

CO’s Message

Good morning!

These will be the final Weekly Routine Orders for the calendar year 2021.

This Wednesday evening is our 13th annual Squadron Mess Dinner. Due to the influx of COVID-19 cases, the dinner will have to be held virtually again, but this is still a better thing than not having it at all. For those cadets who have signed up, Swiss Chalet dinners will be delivered by the Squadron Sponsorship Committee and their hordes of volunteer elves immediately prior to the dinner schedule. We’re all looking forward to celebrating the commitment and fortitude that the cadets, volunteers, and staff of 809 have shown over the last year. This is easily the #1 reason for our success prior to the pandemic and definitely during it. We’ve all shown that we more than deserve the “Immortal” motto that we’ve come to identify with. Well done, one and all!

Our chain of command is rightfully concerned about the current infection numbers with the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus and has directed us to shut down all in-person and virtual activities after the Squadron Mess Dinner. This works out well for us as we were going into our Winter Stand Down until January anyway. We’re expecting to get an update on how we’ll proceed on the 10th of January, so this does mean that our stand-down has been extended by at least a week and that we won’t be returning to training on the 9th. We’ll be providing updates to everyone the moment we get them.

Remember to read the WROs in their entirety.

See you on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Good evening!

We had our first parent briefing on the evening of the 10th and, as was expected in the weeks leading up to the holidays, attendance was sparse. Not to worry though, we’ll be running another in mid-January with a lot more information on what’s going on with the summer training program.

We have two training nights before our Winter Stand Down and they’re both going to be a lot of fun, even if only one of them is in-person. This Wednesday, we have a full evening of marksmanship with an opportunity for each cadet to show their skills and get a baseline for improvement throughout the year. Next Wednesday, we have our last training night of the year where we’re going to have our best approximation of a Canadian Forces Mess Dinner. Even if we don’t get it quite right, we’ll have a good time and enjoy some food (which will be delivered) together. We’ll need to collect the names of all cadets intending to participate, along with any food restrictions you might have so that we can get the order right. Lt Russell will be covering that this Wednesday.

Remember to read the WROs in their entirety. When the new year starts, we may have some perks for those who have done so.

See you on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Good afternoon!

A reminder that we’re going to be having an on-line parent briefing on Friday, the 10th of December at 1900 (7:00pm) to introduce parents and guardians of new cadets to our program and to offer a refresher to the parents and guardians of existing cadets. It will be held on Google Meet and won’t take more than an hour or so. If you know of any parents whose children might be interested in our program, by all means extend the invitation to them. We understand that December is a challenging month for scheduling, so we’ll add more briefings as necessary to bring those who can’t make it up to speed on what we do here.

I have a bit of bad news with respect to the Merit Review Boards that were initially scheduled for the 11th. These aren’t happening and our next opportunity will be the end of January. We’ll build up review and practice opportunities when we return from the winter stand-down so that everyone can be properly prepared.

Remember to read the WROs in their entirety.

See you on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Good morning!

Good news! We’re BACK (did I emphasize that enough?!) to in-person training this week! Get your boots blacked and your FTUs ready. It’s time for the webcams to start collecting dust again!

There are a few things coming up that I’d like to bring to everyone’s attention. We’re going to be having an on-line parent briefing on Friday, the 10th of December at 1900 (7:00pm) to introduce parents and guardians of new cadets to our program and to offer a refresher to the parents and guardians of existing cadets. It will be held on Google Meet and won’t take more than an hour or so. If you know of any parents whose children might be interested in our program, by all means extend the invitation to them.

Also, though we are authorized to resume in-person training again, this unfortunately doesn’t extend to our annual Squadron Mess Dinner on the 22nd of December. We’re going to have to do what we did last year, arranging for deliveries of food and conducting the rest of the event on-line. Once again, we’ll look forward with hope to being able to do this properly next year.

Lastly, there is an opportunity for FSgts to attend an Merit Review Board for WO2 promotion on the 11th of this month. If there are any FSgts interested in sitting the MRB (and I recommend it for all, if only to have the experience of the thing) I’ll need your responses by Wednesday training at the latest.

Thanks very much to 2Lt Couroux and the staff for holding things together while I was gone. We have a phenomenal team here backing up this squadron and I’m proud to serve with them.

Remember to read the WROs in their entirety.

See you on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Good evening!

I hope everyone’s recovered from our first FTX of the year! (Okay, our first FTX in almost two years if you can believe it.) It’s good to be back at practical training again. Thanks to Lt Nicolescu for bringing it all together and to all of the senior cadets and staff members for making it a success.

This week, our focus is on Remembrance Day. I’ve already put out the call for cadets to volunteer at the vigils this Thursday and we’ll all be wearing full dress uniform (1A/C1A) on Wednesday to make sure we’re prepared.

If you haven’t submitted your uniform sizing to CI Dau, best to do it as soon as possible. To be very clear, mixing and matching of uniform items isn’t acceptable. It’s all or nothing, so if you don’t have a C1A uniform that fits, wear civilian clothing on Wednesday. There have been plenty of reminders, so unless you’re a new cadet or CI Dau has told you that we can’t get the right sizes yet, there aren’t really any excuses.

I’ll be away from the 12th to the 23rd, and won’t be in attendance next week, but will be back on the 24th and ready to pick up where we left off.

Remember to read the WROs in their entirety.

See you on Wednesday!

Remembrance Day 2021

It is a tradition in Niagara-on-the-Lake, that 809 Cadets stand vigil at the Old Town cenotaph on Remembrance Day from the early morning hours to the end of the 1100 service. In the afternoon, we also participate in the 1300 service at the Queenston cenotaph. Obviously, the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench in the entire process and we have been unable to participate since Remembrance Day 2019. This year, we’re slowly but surely resuming our role.

Normally, we do an overnight sleepover event at the Royal Canadian Legion the night before and begin standing vigil in half hour shifts from 6am to the end of the first service. We then go to back to the Legion for lunch, travel by bus to the Queenston service and then return to the Legion for parent/guardian pickup. Restrictions on overnight activities and mixed gatherings require us to modify the program this year, so here’s what we’re going to do:

At a minimum, cadets will stand vigil at the Old Town and Queenston cenotaphs during the services themselves and will read “In Flanders Fields” at each service. We already have enough cadet volunteers to fill this role. We’ll work backwards from the 1100 service and begin our half-hour shifts as early as we can depending on how many cadets can get rides to and from the Old Town cenotaph.

Dress for Remembrance Day will be 1A/C1A.

Please email 809air@cadets.gc.ca with your availability for Remembrance Day activities as soon as possible so that we can begin building the schedule.

For those cadets participating, the following letter has been made available to explain to your teachers why you’ll be absent from school while participating.

Cadets who are unable to attend have blanket permission to wear their C1A uniform to school to represent the squadron.

CO’s Message

Good afternoon!

There are a few items to consider for the coming weeks.

First, the Royal Canadian Legion (our primary sponsor) has officially begun the annual Poppy Campaign. Most immediately, this means that the poppy is a mandatory part of our uniforms until the closing of the afternoon Remembrance Day service on Thursday of next week. If you don’t have a poppy for your uniform, we’ll have them at the check-in table on Wednesday. This also means that the Legion Poppy Campaign is looking for volunteers in the community and cadets are authorized to participate.

Second, our first FTX is this weekend! We’re looking forward to a couple of days of hands-on training on Saturday and Sunday, so be prepared to come out and have a good time!

Third, Remembrance Day is next week and we have a role in it. Traditionally, 809 has stood morning vigil in shifts at the Old Town Cenotaph and has participated in the Old Town service in the morning and the Queenston service in the afternoon. Our role is scaled back this year due to COVID-19 precautions, but we’re looking forward to participating.

Further details surrounding the Poppy Campaign and Remembrance Day will follow. These events demand full dress uniform, so if you’re still missing parts, let us know and we’ll get that dealt with as soon as possible.

Remember to read the WROs in their entirety.

See you on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Good afternoon!

Training night is on Wednesday… with the possibility of a familiar face making an appearance! Be sure to come out and find out who it is.

Remember to read the WROs in their entirety.

See you then!

Recruiting

Between last week and the week before, we had five potential new cadets come out to training! We’re very much hoping that they’ve found something they love about what we do and that they’ll stick with us. Keep up the good work and always be on the lookout for people who you think would benefit from out program.

Annual Validation Forms and Detailed Health Questionnaires

We’re down to three cadets (at last count) who need to send in their Annual Validation Forms. Lt Russell will soon be chasing down those who still have to send theirs in.

Those cadets who have been instructed to fill out a Detailed Health Questionnaire must complete it and send it directly to the Regional Cadet Medical Liaison Office at the address below.

Attention: Medical Liaison Office
Regional Cadet Support Unit (Central)
Canadian Forces Base Borden
Post Office Box 1000, Station Main
Borden, Ontario
L0M 1C0

This needs to be done as soon as possible as cadets without validated medical clearances can be temporarily barred from participation. After dealing with the isolation of COVID-19, this is the last thing we’re looking to have happen.

Poppy Campaign

I’ll be speaking on Wednesday with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124 about the schedule for the Poppy Campaign and will update everyone as I have more information.

The Poppy Campaign begins on 29 October this year and ends on 11 November. During this period, the Poppy is a mandatory part of cadet and CAF uniforms.

Remembrance Day

We’re still waiting for permission to run our traditional vigil at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Cenotaph on Remembrance Day. If that comes through, we expect to be running half-hour shifts from 0600 to 1200. We will not be doing our traditional overnight before the vigil, nor will we be coming back to the Legion building afterwards, though I hope we can pick back up on those traditions next year.

Cadets who will be missing a half day of school to participate will be provided with a letter to explain the situation to their schools.

Cadets are encouraged to wear their uniforms to school and participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies there as requested. Participation in the vigil is still mandatory, but earlier shifts can be arranged for cadets who need to be at school for this purpose.
