It’s Remembrance Day week. We’ve got a busy schedule starting Monday with Optional Training. Mandatory training on Wednesday night. Friday is our overnight vigil and Saturday is the Remembrance Day parade. For this special parade we need to have hall hands on deck to show our support for veterans.

Note: If you cannot make it to a mandatory cadet activity, or one that you’ve signed up to attend, you need to call the squadron at 905-468-7584 and leave a message, or send an email to 809air@cadets.gc.ca, indicating your reason for not attending. Failure to do so will result in being marked as absent without excuse and will affect your standings towards training.

October Events

1. Monday Evening Optional Training

For Monday night optional training, we’ll again have the flight simulator available. Come out for social time with other cadets. The more cadets we have attending Monday evenings, the more fun it will be. Optional training will be from 1900-2100hrs.

2. Remembrance Day Vigil and Parades

This weekend will be our annual Remembrance Day vigil and Parade. Order of events are as follows:

  • Preparation for Vigil
    • When: Friday, November 10 @ 1900hrs
      • This will be a sleepover event
    • Where: Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124 – 410 King Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake
    • Dress: Appropriate Civilian Attire
      • Bring your uniform (C1) on a hanger
      • Also bring your parka, gloves and toque
    • We will be preparing for the Remembrance Day parades the following morning in Niagara-on-the-Lake and afternoon in Queenston
    • Bring the following items with you:
      • Sleeping bag and bed roll/air mattress
      • Pyjamas or other items to sleep in
      • Personal hygiene items
      • Shoe shining kit
    • Personal electronic items are not permitted
  • Vigil and Remembrance Day Parade
    • Vigil begins on Saturday November 11 @ 0600hrs
    • Cadets will be participating in an honour guard at the cenotaph in NOTL beginning at 0600 hrs and will be in rotating shifts up until the parade at approx 1045hrs
    • Breakfast will be provided for all participants (Provided by SSC. Parents are asked to donate food items for both breakfast and Friday night activities.)
    • Cadets will be bussed to 2nd parade in Queenston at approx 1230hrs
    • Cadets will return to the legion, by bus, at approx 1400hrs
    • Cadets will assist in clean up of the hall and will be dismissed between 1400hrs and 1500hrs
  • This is one of the most important activities we do throughout the year. This is a time where we can support the legion and remember the soldiers, sailors and aviators that served our country. All cadets and staff are encouraged to take part

3. Fish Fry

The legion is looking for volunteers to take part in service duties for Fish Fry on Thursday nights. This is not a cadet activity, but you can earn time towards your community service hours for high school decoration. All interested parties are to reach out to Ms Kathleen Kells by email. Include your phone number, mobile phone number she can text to, and any dates that you cannot help out.

4. Online Ground School (OGS) – Glider and Power

Cadets wishing to apply for either Glider or Power Pilot Training this summer must complete OGS. This consists of 45 hrs of class work, with the qualifying exam to be completed by the deadline date (15 January 2024). Deadline for applications is 15 November 2023. Let squadron staff know if you’re interested, or if you need more information
