CO’s Message

I haven’t seen any word yet on how our team placed in the NGTA Band and Drill Competition this weekend, but I’m confident that our team put their best foot forward, when commanded to do so, of course. (Please, pardon the bad drill humour.) As soon as I have any information back from the NGTA office, I’ll be sure that everyone knows. Thanks to the entire team and OCdt Couroux for the effort they have put in to make 809 proud. I don’t need to see the standings to know that they’ve accomplished that already.

Thanks to Cpl Lett, Sgt Lett, and WO2 Voogt for assisting the local Royal Canadian Legion branch with their Honours and Awards dinner on Saturday evening; and also to 2Lt Nicolescu for volunteering to supervise at the last minute.

If you haven’t RSVPed for the Annual Cadet Awards Banquet on the 24th, please do so as soon as you can. Once again, dinner for cadets is free, children under 12 are $10 each, and adults are $15 each.

All Monday evenings from now until the Annual Ceremonial Review on the 25th, with the exception of Victoria Day, are geared 100% to display preparation for the review. It’s important that all cadets come out for these. If you can’t make it out, let the staff know as soon as possible.

This week, we’ll be doing our spring fitness testing, so all cadets should be in sports attire and ready to push their best.

By Wednesday, I also expect to have further details and a sign-up sheet for our recruiting booth at the Virgil Stampede.

Summary

May is nearly upon us and things are about to get busy. We’re starting with the inter-flight Drill Competition on Wednesday, which is the final deciding factor for this year’s Top Flight Award at the Annual Ceremonial Review on the 25th of the month. May the best flight win!

Next Saturday is the NGTA Band and Drill Competition to be held at CFB Borden. Our Drill Team has been working hard on Mondays to make sure that they are as prepared as possible for the competition. The bus leaves 809 Squadron HQ at 1000h (10:30am) on Saturday with an expected return at 1745h (5:45pm) on the same day. If you’re on the Drill Team, ensure that you arrive no later than 0945h (9:45am) on Saturday.

We’re in the midst of planning for the Annual Cadet Awards Banquet on the 24th, which is the night before our Annual Ceremonial Review on the 25th. Dinner for cadets is free, children under 12 are $10 each, and adults are $15 each. An event invitation will be sent out today via evite.com. Please let us know how many will be in attendance, including your cadets as soon as you can so that we can prepare for the correct number of guests.

Summary

Tomorrow is Easter Monday and there will be no training, leaving us only the one training night this week. May is right around the corner and things are about to get busy, so let’s enjoy the light schedule while we can.

We had 100% turn-out for CWO Brian James’ presentation on Wednesday. He was very impressed with your deportment, attention to his presentation, and your questions during his visit.

Also on Wednesday, for those parents who haven’t heard yet, for the third year in a row, one of our cadets has been accepted for study at the Royal Military College of Canada! Congratulations to FSgt Nicolescu on his achievement. We’re proud of you and wish you all the best in your studies.

As I mentioned last week, we will be having a parent meeting on the 24th. This meeting is a general meeting to discuss the squadron activities for the coming month and ideas for next year’s training and other activities. We can talk about some items relating to summer training, but we still don’t have our final list of acceptances. There will also be a final meeting on the 29th of May dedicated to summer training, so most of the conversation can be saved for that date.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday!

Summary

Drill Team Practice is on Monday! We need all members of the Drill Team to be present and working toward the NGTA Band and Drill Competition next month.

This week, we have a special guest who is not to be missed! Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Brian James, Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) from the Toronto Scottish Regiment will be present to provide some Canadian Armed Forces familiarization and share his experiences. This evening will be followed by a CO’s Parade, so uniform will be C1.

We’re still on track to resume summer dress on the 24th. We’ll also be having a parent meeting on the 24th to go over summer training, end-of-year activities, and a bit of a heads-up on ideas for next year’s training.

I’ll be attending a community meeting on Monday and won’t be out myself, but I fully expect that our drill team will wow. I’ll see everyone personally on Wednesday.

Summary

A big “Thank You!” goes out to everyone who participated in this weekend’s Cadet Tag Days event: cadets, volunteer parents/guardians, sponsorship committee members and staff. These events aren’t just fundraisers, but an opportunity to increase community awareness of who we are and what we do.

Drill Team Practice is on Monday, so bring your best! We need all members of the Drill Team on board as we approach the NGTA Band and Drill Competition next month.

On the 17th of April, we will have a special guest.

I’m going to be optimistic and assume that the slowly warming weather will reach a point where we can switch to summer dress on the 24th. Stay tuned on that one.

See you this week!

Summary

Welcome to April!

Congratulations to Cpl Forsyth for his placing second overall at the NAG Effective Speaking Competition! Way to represent 809! Thanks also to Mrs. Gowans for her ongoing efforts in supporting the Effective Speaking Program.

For those cadets (and 2Lt Nicolescu) who volunteered to be a flag party for the old-timers’ hockey game on Sunday. Thank you for stepping up at short notice and pushing for some more visibility in our community. We’re going to have a few more opportunities to do this over the next few months.

Registration for Cadet Tag Days has been up for a week now and we’ve had a lot of sign-ups, but still need a lot more. All of the Friday night slots are full, but there’s still room on Saturday and Sunday.

Sign-up sheets can be found here: https://809cadets.ca/events/event-sign-ups/

Per last week’s discussion at Drill Team Practice, it’s all-in until the NGTA Drill Competition. Bring your best on Monday nights and we’ll show everyone what we’re made of!

Also, we’re looking forward to warmer weather and the opportunity to switch to short sleeves soon, but it appears that Mother Nature isn’t quite ready for us to do that yet. As soon as we have some consistency there, we’ll do the switch.

Summary

For those of you weren’t at closing parade on Wednesday, we’ve had our first two summer training acceptances! Congratulations to Sgts Abt and Bell on being selected for Advanced Aviation Technology – Aircraft Maintenance and Advanced Aerospace, respectively. Since then, we’ve had four more offers and I’m hoping to have that number climb a bit in the next few days.

As mentioned by OCdt Couroux, Monday night’s Drill Team practice is critical. If you’re on the Drill Team, it’s important that you don’t miss Monday’s practice. It’s make-or-break decision time!

This Saturday is the Wing 10 Effective Speaking Competition in Grimsby. Please join me in sending Cpl Forsyth our best wishes for success as he competes!

Next week is regular training with the addition of our spring Cadet Tag Days at the end of the week. I’ll be sure to have a sign-up sheet posted on the web site by Wednesday.

Summary

Welcome back from what I hope was a relaxing and refreshing March Break. We had a great time at our bowling night with 87 Eagle Squadron last Wednesday and are looking forward to many more opportunities to work with other squadrons in the future.

For the next two Mondays, we’re focusing on drill team practice in anticipation of the competition coming up in April. We’ll stagger that a bit by scheduling something different on the first Monday of April, but we need to get a whole lot more practice in if we want to make a good showing at the competition.

We’re all looking forward to seeing everyone back this week!

Summary

Just in case anyone forgot, there’s no training this week due to March Break. On the other hand, we are getting together with 87 Eagle Squadron in Welland for a night of bowling and pizza on the 13th from 1830 (6:30pm) to 2100 (9:00pm). The location is Jeff’s Bowl-O-Rama at 968 Niagara Street, Welland, ON L3C 1M6. Cadets are responsible for their own transportation but should email if rides need to be coordinated. We’ll be playing two games and pizza/pop will be served.

We’re back to regular training beginning with drill team practice on Monday the 18th. Enjoy your March Break!

Summary

I’ve just received the results from the Zone 7 Marksmanship Competition on Saturday. Our team came in 7th out of 14 teams, which is a great showing considering the limited practice time that we had available. Congratulations to everyone on the team! Thanks to CV Carbone, Lt Russell, and Capt Palumbo for helping to bring it all together. Special thanks also go to OCdt Couroux for hauling air rifles from place to place before competition day.

Due to last week’s weather-related cancellation, we’re picking up this week with the same schedule. We’re going to forego the CO’s Parade in March in the interest of getting more training done.

Also, we’re in the last week before March Break and I’m working out a few possible activities for the week. I’ll be speaking with cadets on Monday and Wednesday to determine availability before putting together a final schedule.
