CO’s Message

Greetings from Kilkenny, Ireland! I won’t be around this week at our regular training night, but Lt Russell and the rest of the staff have things well in hand.

As you’re already aware, there won’t be any Monday night training this week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Stay home and enjoy time with your family.

Wednesday night is our first fitness testing night of the training year. There will be no uniforms worn on Wednesday. Come out in sports attire and be prepared to do your best.

Once again, remember that Wednesday evening’s Regular Training Night is mandatory for cadets to attend. If a cadet cannot attend, it is essential that they report their absence before training begins for the evening. Call or text the squadron phone at (905) 468-7584 or email 809air@cadets.gc.ca to report.

I will be returning to Canada on the 20th and will be back to cadets next Monday night. Until then, please escalate any concerns to Lt Russell either personally or via email to matthew.russell@cadets.gc.ca as necessary.

CO’s Message

We’re coming off of a busy weekend. We’ve had success with our Cadet Tag Days event, both in raising needed funds for our activities and in increasing awareness of our program in the community. Unfortunately, our Gliding Familiarization Day wasn’t as successful due to two factors. One of these was the weather, which we have no real control over. The other was a communications breakdown, which should not have occurred. Once again, I apologize for inconveniencing everyone. I’ve already had some helpful correspondence with the Gliding Centre commander and am confident that we can avoid this happening again. I’m also looking into options for our newer cadets to get in on a different gliding session with another squadron so that they don’t miss out on the experience. More information will be posted as soon as I have it.

As discussed last week, we’re doing Drill Team practice from 1900-2000 (7:00pm-8:00pm) and sports from 2000-2100 (8:00pm-9:00pm) for our Optional Training Night on Monday.

Remember that Wednesday evening’s Regular Training Night is mandatory for cadets to attend. If a cadet cannot attend, it is essential that they report their absence before training begins for the evening. Call or text the squadron phone at (905) 468-7584 or email 809air@cadets.gc.ca to report.

From 10-20 Oct 19, I will be out of the country. During my absence, please escalate any concerns to Lt Russell either personally or via email to matthew.russell@cadets.gc.ca as necessary.

Lastly, there will be no Optional Training Night on 14 Oct 19. Stay home and enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend. We’ll be back on the Wednesday following.

CO’s Message

This week, we’re repeating our optional training night schedule of Drill Team practice from 1900-2000 and sports from 2000-2100.

Wednesday is our first CO’s Parade of the year. For those who are unfamiliar with this, it is an opportunity for cadets to practice a full ceremonial parade and march-past. These are usually done monthly and sometimes involve a significant member of the community to serve as the Reviewing Officer (RO) of the parade. This month, being our first of the training year, we’ll keep a bit lower key and forego the community Reviewing Officer.

We also have our Cadet Tag Days fundraiser. Every cadet needs to sign up for two shifts for the weekend. Those who sign up for both shifts on Saturday will have lunch provided. Sign-up sheets can be found here: https://809cadets.ca/events/event-sign-ups/.

Lastly, we may have an opportunity to have another gliding familiarization day this weekend. If all goes well, we’ll have 20 spots and can take most of our cadets up. Preference goes to newer cadets and those who haven’t had a familiarization flight before, in that order. That said, we’ll likely have enough spots for almost everyone, so sign up! I’ll confirm 100% by Wednesday evening at the latest.

Remember that you need to be logged into the web site to see the sign-up sheets.

CO’s Message

This past week represented good growth for 809. We had six new cadets sign up for our program and we’re really excited to see their contributions over the upcoming years. Welcome to the squadron!

That said, we can always make room for more! If you have friends who you think would enjoy what we do, invite them out while we’re still early in our training year.

Sunday’s Decoration Day ceremony was well-represented by 809’s cadets. We had eight cadets sign up for the event but had 11 on parade! To all of the cadets who participated, whether you signed up or made the last-minute decision to come, thank you.

This week, we have our first Drill Team practice on Monday from 1900-2000, followed by squadron sports from 2000-2100. Wednesday, for our regular training night, we’ll be conducting our first Effective Speaking class with Mrs. Gowans for our level two cadets. We’ll also have Capt Hollands, our Zone Training Officer visiting us from Toronto to see how we’re doing.

Next week, beyond our mandatory and optional training nights, we have our Cadet Tag Days fundraiser. This serves two purposes. There’s the obvious fundraising component that helps pay for many of our training activities, but it also gets us out in our community and reminds everyone of who we are. More than one cadet has joined us after seeing cadets participating in Cadet Tag Day activities. Every cadet needs to sign up for two shifts for the weekend. Those who sign up for both shifts on Saturday will have lunch provided. Sign-up sheets can be found here: https://809cadets.ca/events/event-sign-ups/.

Remember that you need to be logged into the web site to see the sign-up sheets.

One last thing. We’re no longer posting the Wednesday night training schedule in the Weekly Routine Orders. In order to see what’s being taught to whom, refer to the Events Calendar for full details. It can be found here: Events Calendar.

CO’s Message

I have it on good authority that while I was away at the Commanding Officers’ Conference, we had a really successful bottle drive. Thanks to our dedicated SSC members, our cadets, the Van Noort family, and everyone else who made it out and contributed to its success. I’m hoping we’ll have some final numbers sometime in the next week.

We also managed to get a good gliding day in despite the threatening weather, apparently getting the last flight down before the rain began. The timing was perfect!

My personal thanks go out to Lt Russell and 2Lt Nicolescu respectively for supervising these events.

This week, we’re getting a full start on our training year. On Monday, we’ll have our Welcome BBQ, so if you know any potential cadets who might be interested in coming out and seeing what we’re all about, this is the time to invite them out. On Wednesday, we have our first regular training night of the year, so come eager to learn.

The following week on Sunday 22 Sep, the Royal Canadian Legion has asked us to send a contingent of cadets to participate in their Decoration Day Ceremony from 1400 (2:00pm) to 1600 (4:00pm). Any cadets who are available to co0me out and help support the legion should sign up here: Event Sign-Ups.

Remember that you need to be logged into the web site to see the sign-up sheets.

See you tomorrow night!

CO’s Message

Here’s what’s going on this week.

On Monday Night, we’re going to have a supply night. If you have uniform items that don’t fit, this is the time to come in and get them replaced. If you haven’t turned in your paperwork for the new year, by all means come by and drop it off on Monday as well.

Wednesday, we have the Snowbirds Airshow during the afternoon and won’t have any training during the evening. I’ve you’ve signed up to volunteer for the event, by at the Information Booth at Niagara District Airport at 1345 (1:45pm) in C2B uniform. Otherwise, all cadets are encouraged to come out and enjoy the show. If you come in uniform (again, C2B) you get discounted admission for only $5. Come to the Information Booth and Capt Chevalier will take care of your admission fee.

If you’re an instructor, OCdt Couroux will be having a short Training Cell meeting that day as well at 809 HQ at 1830 (6:30pm) that shouldn’t take more than an hour.

Saturday, 14 Sep, we have our Bottle Drive at Van Noort Greenhouses. We need everybody our to for this event. For cadets, this is a mandatory fundraising day. For parents, guardians, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends, &c, this is a great opportunity to come out and help support your cadet’s involvement in our program. We’ll be starting at 0900 (9:00am) and finishing at 1600 (4:00pm) helping our community and ourselves by collecting empty beer, wine, and liquor bottles. I regret that I won’t be able to be there myself as I have to be at CFB Borden for the Commanding Officers’ Conference, but you’ll be in good hands with Lt Russell.

Sunday, 15 Sep we have our Gliding Familiarization Day at Niagara District Airport from 1300 (1:00pm) to 1600 (4:00pm) and have seven (7) spots left. Priority goes to junior cadets. Sign up at: https://809cadets.ca/events/event-sign-ups/

We kick-off of the training year properly on 16 Sep with our Welcome BBQ followed by our first regular training night of the year on 18 Sep.

Remember that you need to be logged into the web site to see the sign-up sheets.

See you at the Airshow and/or the Welcome BBQ!

CO’s Message

The Awards Banquet and ACR are behind us. Congratulations to all of the cadets on an exemplary performance this year. Now we’re down to only one night, where we do our level promotions and turn the squadron over to a new Cadet Squadron Commander.

While the cadets are preparing for the Change of Command ceremony at 20:15 (8:15pm), I’ll be conducting a parent briefing (or review in many cases) of what to expect for summer training at 19:00 (7:00pm). If your cadet signed up for summer training, come to the briefing so that you have all of the necessary information for that moment that a last-minute offer comes through.

We still have three spots remaining for the Canada’s Wonderland trip on Sunday. If you’re thinking of going, there’s no better time than now to sign up!

CO’s Message

This is it! Our final run-up to this weekend’s Annual Ceremonial Review. We’re down to our last practice on Wednesday so it’s important that everyone come out. We’ll also be doing uniform exchanges for those who need them, so if anyone needs a swap, this is the time to do it.

Thanks to all of the cadets who came out to the booth at the Virgil Stampede this weekend. Between proposed cavalry units and discussion of press gangs (most importantly, why we don’t do those), we had a great event and made our community better aware of who we are and what we do.

We still have one spot remaining for gliding on Sunday after the Annual Ceremonial review. If you’re available and interested, sign up and grab that last spot!

Remember that you need to be logged into the site to see sign-up sheets.

CO’s Message

We’re coming into the final stretch. We have one Monday and two Wednesdays left before the Annual Ceremonial Review, so let’s make sure we have everyone on-board so that we can show 809 at our best to our friends, family, and community.

This weekend at the Virgil Stampede, we’ll be running a recruiting booth to bring new cadets to the squadron for next year. We’re asking cadets, sponsorship committee members, and staff to volunteer for the event and have posted sign-up sheets on our events sign-up page. If you have any availability and want to help grow the squadron, we appreciate your time.

If you haven’t RSVPed for the Annual Cadet Awards Banquet, we need to have final numbers no later than the 15th of March. Please ensure that you have indicated the number of attendees including your cadet(s) and bring payment in on the 22nd. Alternatively, our SSC can now accept Interac etransfers at treasurer@809cadets.ca. If the etransfer requests a password, use “dinner” when sending funds.

Sunday, after the Annual Ceremonial review, we have our spring gliding day with 10 spots available. If you’re available and interested, sign up and let us know. Priority will be given to cadets who have never flown. I’m still waiting to find out if we have the morning or afternoon session, but will let you know as soon as I have that information.

Remember that you need to be logged into the site to see sign-up sheets.

See you on Monday!
