CO’s Message

Good morning!

Last week, the senior cadets began supplementing our regular training with cooking activities and fitness. I had the opportunity to sit in on some of the cooking class and it appeared that the cadets were having a good time of it. I’m looking forward to hearing some MRE-related kitchen tales.

Congratulations to Sgt Forsyth, who sat the Glider Pilot Training Course Qualification Exam on Saturday. It’s been too long since the squadron has had a cadet with wings on their uniform, so we’re all excited to follow his progress as summer approaches.

I’m a bit concerned that cadets aren’t reading the WROs each week. It takes a fair bit of coordination to keep things running in a virtual environment and it doesn’t help when there’s a communications breakdown. To put out a couple of examples: We had some confusion with the cooking class on Monday where cadets were connecting to the Meet link for the Wednesday Training Night rather than the one that had been posted for the activity. We have also had circumstances where cadets were wearing an improper order of dress. Attendance is also a concern where cadets are either not signing into the attendance form or are failing to notify us when they cannot attend. It’s important that cadets understand not only what’s happening with the unit, but the details too. If this doesn’t happen, it leads not only to confusion but missed opportunities too.

To get a feel for who is actively reading, I would like each cadet who reads this WRO to email me at jody.lemoine@809cadets.ca and confirm that you have done so.

Virtual Training continues this week as there has been no further news related to the lockdown. Remember to use the links posted below for each of the sessions. Regular training, as always, is on Wednesday, so we’ll see you all then if not before.

CO’s Message

Good morning!

As I mentioned last week, the senior cadets have some interesting activities coming up and we’re starting on Monday! In addition to CV Gowans’ Effective Speaking class from 1900-2000, we’ll be doing a cooking activity hosted by WO2 Abt from 1800-1900, and fitness with WO1 Lett from 2000-2100. There’s more in store, including Aerospace with WO2 Bell and radio operation with Sgt Forsyth. Stay tuned for further scheduling!

For the cadets who have signed up for the first session of the cooking activity, don’t forget to drop by the squadron HQ today between 1500 and 1530 for a zero-touch pickup of your MRE.

Virtual Training continues on Wednesday as well, so we’ll see you all then!

CO’s Message

Happy new year! We’re happy to have 2020 behind us and, while we’re still in lockdown at the beginning of 2021, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Here’s to an amazing new year for all of us.

We’re hoping you’re as enthusiastic as we are about getting started again with the cadet year. The senior cadets have been working on some really interesting activities outside of our regular training, so stay tuned to see what they have in store.

Virtual Training begins again on Wednesday. See you all then! Remember, if you can’t make it for whatever reason, it’s important that you inform us in advance. If you’re having difficulty connecting for whatever reason, we can help, but you need to let us know.

Next Monday night from 1900-2000, Effective Speaking training begins again with CV Gowans continues. Participation in this training is mandatory for level two cadets, but everyone’s encouraged to get involved even if you’ve done it before. It’s not too late to show up and participate.

CO’s Message

This is the last publication of WROs for calendar year 2020. After our Squadron Annual Mess Dinner on Wednesday, we go into our winter stand-down and won’t be returning to training until 6 Jan 2021. I have never been more glad to see another year put behind us, nor have I been more optimistic about the year ahead. The commitment that each and every one of you (cadets, staff, and SSC volunteers) have made to keeping our squadron going in these adverse times has been an inspiration and I’m very much looking forward to seeing your perseverance rewarded in 2021. It only gets better from here.

This week, we’re suspending our Effective Speaking training for Monday evening. 128 RCACS in Thorold is hosting a special presentation from Capt Christian Stenner, MStJ, CD, FRCGS of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society about the exploration of caves. I’ve already signed up and am really looking forward to his presentation. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s important that you do so in advance so that Capt Copses-Parker at 128 knows how many seats to provision for the Zoom conference.

On Wednesday, we’re conducting our Annual Mess Dinner. Normally, this would be a very memorable in-person formal dinner to mark the end of training for the calendar year. Circumstances have forced us to try to approximate it virtually, but we’re going to do the best that we can. There are two significant considerations this year:

  1. Dinner is being delivered to your home. It is IMPORTANT that you fill in the Virtual Mess Dinner form to indicate your attendance and any dietary restrictions NO LATER THAN 1900 (7:00pm) on Monday, 14 Dec. Failing to do so does not prevent you from attending, but you’ll be on your own for rustling up dinner and you’ll be missing out on early delivery of a special gift too.
  2. Awards and presentations from Training Year 2019-2020 will be presented during the dinner. We didn’t have an ACR and those awards have been waiting too long to be presented. Physical keeper plaques and bursary monies will have to wait until there’s an opportunity to physically present such things.

We’re relaxing the formality of the Mess Dinner as well, considering the medium. We would normally be in 1A (CAF) or C1A (cadets) for a formal event like this, but we’re going to stick to 3C (CAF) and C3F (cadets) for the virtual event.

See you all on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Monday night from 1900-2000, Effective Speaking training with CV Gowans continues. Remember that participation in this training is considered mandatory for level two cadets, and is highly encouraged for all.

Next Monday, we’ll be taking a break from Effective Speaking for a special presentation from Capt Christian Stenner, MStJ, CD, FRCGS of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society about one of the last unexplored frontiers of our planet. I’m looking forward to hearing what Capt Stenner has to tell us and am hoping that everyone will join. Connection details will be provided as soon as we have them.

We’re still working out the final details for our last training night of the calendar year on the 16th. Expect all of the details to be finalized and announced by Wednesday.

See you all on then!

CO’s Message

On this past Saturday, we had three cadets attend (virtually) the Niagara-area Leadership Workshop hosted by 358 Sir Isaac Brock RCSCC. I still have to speak with them about how the day went, but am confident based on previous events that they got a lot out of their time.

Monday night from 1900-2000, we begin Effective Speaking training with CV Gowans. She has done an amazing job with the program these last few years and we’re looking forward to hearing the results from our newer cadets this year. Remember that participation in this training is considered mandatory for level two cadets, and is highly encouraged for all.

Tuesday at 0000 is the deadline for award nominations for the 2019/20 training year. If you haven’t nominated a deserving cadet, take the opportunity to do so before the deadline.

CO’s Message

We’ve been keeping an eye on the COVID-19 numbers in Niagara and are seeing the numbers come down. This makes us optimistic that we can return to in-person training sooner than later, but there’s still no update on when that might be. As circumstances change, we’ll be sure to update everyone, but it’s still virtual training for the moment.

Cadets are reminded that virtual training nights are still training nights. If you can’t attend, it is still essential that they let us know in advance by emailing usat admino@809cadets.ca[/private], or texting/phoning the squadron phone

We’ve had a few cadets sign up for the Niagara-area Leadership Workshop occurring all day on the 28th of the month. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late. Just send me and email, let me know, and I’ll add you to the list.

CO’s Message

I’d like to begin this week by thanking all of our cadets and parents/guardians for bearing with us as the changing landscape of COVID-19 control measures brings uncertainty to our program delivery. We understand that routine is central to all of our lives and that last minute changes aren’t easy to deal with, and I’m impressed with the way that everyone has worked with us to make things work. We’re all working toward having a more normalized schedule while maintaining safety as a top priority.

Last week’s Remembrance Day training night had to be switched to virtual with less than 48 hours of notice, but our senior cadets brought it all together well with a moving presentation and a good question and answer session with the cadets. LCol (Retired) Kenn Moody and Maj (Retired) Brad Kempston were guests to our session later in the evening and shared their invaluable perspectives on service and Remembrance with the cadets. Thank you both for taking the time to join us.

This week, we’re back to regular (virtual) training, but we’re starting to work on optional activities over the following weeks. Mrs. Gowans is expecting to start our Effective Speaking soon, and WO2 Bell and Sgt Forsyth have put forward some very interesting ideas for optional training to begin later in the training year. We’ll keep you informed as things solidify.

For level 3 cadets and above, there is a Niagara-area Leadership Workshop occurring all day on the 28th of the month. If you’re interested in attending, please let me know so that I can get you signed up.

See you on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Congratulations to all of the cadets who received the uniform updates for their promotions last week. If you weren’t in attendance, don’t worry. We’ve got your slip-ons, rank badges, and level badges waiting for you and will issue them as soon as we see you. When everyone has them and we have a complete set of pictures, Sgts Couroux and Abt will be working on a collage so that everyone who couldn’t be there can share in our cadets’ accomplishments.

Once again, there will be a virtual meeting on Google Meet for parents/guardians of existing and new cadets where we will outline how 809 Newark Squadron will be delivering the air cadet program this year. For new cadets and their parents/guardians, this will be a summary of the cadet program, our objectives for the training year, and a comparison of how we will be operating versus how we operate normally. For parents and guardians of existing cadets, this will be an overview of changes that have become necessary in the face of COVID-19. A Q&A session will follow the presentation. If you know of any potential new cadets who might be interested in joining us, please direct them to one of these sessions. If further dates need to be scheduled, those can be done as required.

As of Friday, 30 Oct, the Legion Poppy Campaign has begun. Until the end of Remembrance Day itself, the Poppy is a mandatory component of the air cadet uniform. When wearing tunics or shirts with pockets, the Poppy is worn centred on the flap of the left breast pocket. When wearing sweaters or t-shirts, the Poppy is worn approximately over the heart. We won’t be participating in the Poppy Campaign directly this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, but we will still be observing the season in our own fashion. If you do not already have a Poppy for your uniform, we will have them at HQ when you arrive for training.

See you on Wednesday!
