CO’s Message

Good afternoon!

As we indicated last week, there will be no optional activities on Monday night. Enjoy the time with your families, even if you’ve already spent a lot of time with them. It’s never enough.

We’ll be back to regular training on Wednesday along with a visit from our Area Elemental Advisor, LCdr Reilly. He’ll be meeting with the staff and perhaps some of the senior cadets to see how everyone is holding up. We’ll return to Aerospace Activities and Effective Speaking on Monday next week.

We’re out of province-wide lockdown, but still in overall lockdown as a region, so there’s no change the status of virtual vs in-person training. Any prospective changes will be sent out as soon as we know more.

We’ll see you all at regular training on Wednesday!

Cadet Activities Program and Summer Training

Good afternoon.

With the province’s announcement that March Break will shift to April this year, I’m waiting for further word on what activities will be available for this period. The area has indicated that a number of online activities will be running for cadets, but I don’t want to provide details that are out of date. Further information will be forthcoming shortly.

For summer training, it appears that the only non-national summer training course that is on the current agenda is the Survival Instructor Course running at CTC Connaught from 12 July to 20 August. I already have one cadet who has expressed interest but will hold off on applications until I know how many intend to apply. Instructor-level courses are available to cadets at Training Level 3 and above. If you intend to apply for this course, let me know as soon as possible.

CO’s Message

Good evening!

On Monday this week, we’ll be joining 128 Squadron for a Financial Planning Seminar. As I mentioned last week, money management is one of the most important skills in life and also one that we tend to neglect, so don’t miss this opportunity to start down the path to financial literacy.

Congratulations to OCdt Couroux, who has just completed his Occupational Training Course with flying colours and will soon receive his Commission! Keep your right arm exercised because there will be 25% more saluting when we return to in-person training.

We’ll see you all at regular training on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Good afternoon!

Due to some logistical problems, tonight’s cooking activity is going to have to be postponed. We’re still on for effective speaking at 1900 and fitness at 2000, so don’t miss out on these.

Next week, we’ll be suspending some of our local activities and joining 128 Squadron for a Financial Planning seminar. Managing money properly is one of the most important skills in life and we tend not to prepare our youth adequately for this, so we’re making sure that you have the opportunity to get started. The 15th of February is Family Day and we won’t have any activities that night. The regular Monday night schedule, beginning with the aerospace club, will begin the week after that.

There’s still no news with respect to the COVID-19 lockdown, but I expect we’ll have something more in the next week. We should also have more information on March Break and Summer Training in the same time frame.

We’ll see you all at regular training on Wednesday!

CO’s Message

Good morning!

Our Monday night activities appear to be working well. We began a three-week rotation of cooking, aerospace, and radio two weeks ago to supplement CV Gowans’ Effective Speaking class and WO1 Lett has been adding fitness to the mix too. For those cadets who are all-in for those activities, that makes for a busier night than our regular training nights. Thank you to all of the instructors for keeping our program engaging! As a note, there has been some feedback that the attendance could be better, so I’ll remind cadets that if they sign up for something it’s their responsibility to either attend or notify us that they can’t.

Thank you to everyone who replied back when they read the WROs. That gives me a solid list of who is reading them and when. I’ve built a follow-up list to find out what’s going on with those who haven’t been reading. I’ll also take this opportunity to remind everyone else to continue to read them as early in the week as possible so that you’re fully informed about what’s going on during the week.

The COVID-19 situation in the province appears to be easing a bit, but it’s a bit early to hope for a change in our training format. As we have more information, we’ll pass it to you as soon as we can. In the meantime, we’ll continue virtual training as usual. Remember to use the links posted below for each of the sessions.

We’ll see you all at regular training on Wednesday, if not before.

CO’s Message

Good morning!

Last week, the senior cadets began supplementing our regular training with cooking activities and fitness. I had the opportunity to sit in on some of the cooking class and it appeared that the cadets were having a good time of it. I’m looking forward to hearing some MRE-related kitchen tales.

Congratulations to Sgt Forsyth, who sat the Glider Pilot Training Course Qualification Exam on Saturday. It’s been too long since the squadron has had a cadet with wings on their uniform, so we’re all excited to follow his progress as summer approaches.

I’m a bit concerned that cadets aren’t reading the WROs each week. It takes a fair bit of coordination to keep things running in a virtual environment and it doesn’t help when there’s a communications breakdown. To put out a couple of examples: We had some confusion with the cooking class on Monday where cadets were connecting to the Meet link for the Wednesday Training Night rather than the one that had been posted for the activity. We have also had circumstances where cadets were wearing an improper order of dress. Attendance is also a concern where cadets are either not signing into the attendance form or are failing to notify us when they cannot attend. It’s important that cadets understand not only what’s happening with the unit, but the details too. If this doesn’t happen, it leads not only to confusion but missed opportunities too.

To get a feel for who is actively reading, I would like each cadet who reads this WRO to email me at jody.lemoine@809cadets.ca and confirm that you have done so.

Virtual Training continues this week as there has been no further news related to the lockdown. Remember to use the links posted below for each of the sessions. Regular training, as always, is on Wednesday, so we’ll see you all then if not before.

Virtual Orienteering Clinics

The Regional Cadet Support Unit (Central) at CFB Borden is organizing a series of virtual orienteering clinics, each consisting of three 90 minute Zoom sessions delivered by civilian partners (Ottawa Orienteering Club and Toronto Orienteering Club). These clinics are open to cadets at training level three and above. The session layout is as follows:

Session 1:

  • Foundations of orienteering (to include what the sport is about, safety, how to read a map and how to use a map)
  • Keeping in touch with your location and progress

Session 2:

  • Build on skills taught in Session one
  • Navigation off trails
  • Route choices
  • Use of a compass, including bearings

Session 3:

  • Succeeding in competitions
  • Common mistakes
  • Feature recognition and related skills
  • How to plan, set up and conduct practice activities and courses
  • Map resources for areas without access to orienteering maps

The next clinic will begin on the 17th of February (1830-2000) with two follow-up sessions spaced two weeks apart (3rd of March, 17th of March) to allow cadets to practice the skills they have learned.

The goal of this training is to provide senior cadets with tools and resources to develop orienteering training at the squadron. This will, in turn, provide resources to improve performance at the Area Orienteering competitions; which the unit hopes will resume next Fall.

If you’re interested, email me as soon as possible as space is limited. I’ll need the following information as part of your message:

  1. Confirmation that you have attended an Area Orienteering competition. (Note: Participation in a competition is not mandatory);
  2. Confirmation that you have a reliable, high-speed internet connection; and
  3. Your reason for wanting to take this training.

Let me know if there are any questions.

CO’s Message

Good morning!

As I mentioned last week, the senior cadets have some interesting activities coming up and we’re starting on Monday! In addition to CV Gowans’ Effective Speaking class from 1900-2000, we’ll be doing a cooking activity hosted by WO2 Abt from 1800-1900, and fitness with WO1 Lett from 2000-2100. There’s more in store, including Aerospace with WO2 Bell and radio operation with Sgt Forsyth. Stay tuned for further scheduling!

For the cadets who have signed up for the first session of the cooking activity, don’t forget to drop by the squadron HQ today between 1500 and 1530 for a zero-touch pickup of your MRE.

Virtual Training continues on Wednesday as well, so we’ll see you all then!

Happy new year! We’re happy to have 2020 behind us and, while we’re still in lockdown at the beginning of 2021, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Here’s to an amazing new year for all of us.

We’re hoping you’re as enthusiastic as we are about getting started again with the cadet year. The senior cadets have been working on some really interesting activities outside of our regular training, so stay tuned to see what they have in store.

Virtual Training begins again on Wednesday. See you all then! Remember, if you can’t make it for whatever reason, it’s important that you inform us in advance. If you’re having difficulty connecting for whatever reason, we can help, but you need to let us know.

Next Monday night from 1900-2000, Effective Speaking training begins again with CV Gowans continues. Participation in this training is mandatory for level two cadets, but everyone’s encouraged to get involved even if you’ve done it before. It’s not too late to show up and participate.

CO’s Message

This is the last publication of WROs for calendar year 2020. After our Squadron Annual Mess Dinner on Wednesday, we go into our winter stand-down and won’t be returning to training until 6 Jan 2021. I have never been more glad to see another year put behind us, nor have I been more optimistic about the year ahead. The commitment that each and every one of you (cadets, staff, and SSC volunteers) have made to keeping our squadron going in these adverse times has been an inspiration and I’m very much looking forward to seeing your perseverance rewarded in 2021. It only gets better from here.

This week, we’re suspending our Effective Speaking training for Monday evening. 128 RCACS in Thorold is hosting a special presentation from Capt Christian Stenner, MStJ, CD, FRCGS of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society about the exploration of caves. I’ve already signed up and am really looking forward to his presentation. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s important that you do so in advance so that Capt Copses-Parker at 128 knows how many seats to provision for the Zoom conference.

On Wednesday, we’re conducting our Annual Mess Dinner. Normally, this would be a very memorable in-person formal dinner to mark the end of training for the calendar year. Circumstances have forced us to try to approximate it virtually, but we’re going to do the best that we can. There are two significant considerations this year:

  1. Dinner is being delivered to your home. It is IMPORTANT that you fill in the Virtual Mess Dinner form to indicate your attendance and any dietary restrictions NO LATER THAN 1900 (7:00pm) on Monday, 14 Dec. Failing to do so does not prevent you from attending, but you’ll be on your own for rustling up dinner and you’ll be missing out on early delivery of a special gift too.
  2. Awards and presentations from Training Year 2019-2020 will be presented during the dinner. We didn’t have an ACR and those awards have been waiting too long to be presented. Physical keeper plaques and bursary monies will have to wait until there’s an opportunity to physically present such things.

We’re relaxing the formality of the Mess Dinner as well, considering the medium. We would normally be in 1A (CAF) or C1A (cadets) for a formal event like this, but we’re going to stick to 3C (CAF) and C3F (cadets) for the virtual event.

See you all on Wednesday!
