Hello 809!

Well, here we are, the last weekend of training for 2023. We have only 2 items this week: Monday optional training and on Wednesday, our 15th Annual Mess Dinner. Following that, we’re shutting down for a well-deserved break. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish the Cadets, Staff & SSC a happy holiday season and I’m looking forward to seeing you all at the mess dinner and also in the new year.

15th Annual Mess Dinner

Where: Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124, 410 King Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake
When: 20 December 2023, 1815 Social, 1830 Start

This will be our last parade for 2023 before the holidays. This is considered part of your mandatory training and is meant to teach you about the traditions of the Royal Canadian Air Force. It also gives you the opportunity to take part in a social event that centres around the cadets of 809 Squadron.

Note: If you cannot make it to a mandatory cadet activity, or one that you’ve signed up to attend, you need to call the squadron at 905-468-7584 and leave a message or send an email to 809air@cadets.gc.ca indicating your reason for not attending. Failure to do so will result in being marked as absent without excuse and will affect your standings towards training.

Cadet and Staff Sign-Up

There is a sign up for the event on our web site. It’s important that you indicate your intention to join us for the eventing.

Parental Assistance Sign-Up 

Parents have traditionally volunteered to assist in the event by acting as servers for the evening.We’re looking for 6 parents to sign up to help out.

We look forward to seeing everyone for fun and social time.

Announcements

1. Monday Evening – Optional Training

For Monday night optional training, we’ll again have the flight simulator available. Come out for social time with other cadets.

The more cadets we have attending Monday evenings, the more fun it will be. Optional training will be from 1900-2100.

2. Fish Fry

The Legion is looking for volunteers to take part in service duties for Fish Fry on Thursday nights. This is not a cadet activity, but you can earn time towards your community service hours for high school decoration. All interested parties are to reach out to Ms. Kathleen Kells by email. Include your phone number, a cell phone number she can text to, and any dates that you cannot help out. Ms. Kells’ email is ktkells@gmail.com.

3. Holiday Shutdown and 2024 Return to Training

The squadron will stand down for the holidays directly after the Mess dinner.  We’ll be returning to training as follows in 2024:

• Monday night optional training returns: Monday, 8 January
• Wednesday night mandatory training: Wednesday, 10 January
• Bottle Drive: Saturday, 13 January – Mandatory – All cadets, staff and SSC members – Parents will be needed to assist
• Monday night range training: Monday, 15 January

Please note that this is the final set of WROs that will be published on our website, and also the final WROs for 2023. WROs will return on Sunday, 7 January and will only be published on Microsoft Teams. You will need to ensure your Cadet365 email is active and you have access to Teams in order to view them.

To see the WROs, you will need to open Microsoft Teams and click on the “Teams” icon in the toolbar on the left hand side of the page.

Under “Teams”, you will need to access the “General” file under “T-CEN-809 Air”. There you will see all the WROs published with the most current one showing first.
