COVID-19 Rules
COVID-19 rules have changed slightly for this training year. Masks are no longer mandatory, except under certain circumstances, such as travelling in military transport or when entering an establishment that requires masks to be worn. If you feel comfortable wearing a mask, and would like to continue, you are permitted to do so.
You are no longer required to fill out and post a declaration. The link for this will no longer be provided.
Social distancing will still be practiced as much as possible. Also, it’s encouraged that we do as much training as possible outside.
We’re still committed to making cadets a safe and fun experience. If you have any questions on this, please consult a staff member.
If you feel sick, do the responsible thing. Stay home.

Announcements
1. Monday Evening Optional Training – 24 October – Squadron HQ
This Monday evening will consist of effective speaking (1st half of the evening) followed by sports (2nd half of the evening). Dress is appropriate civilian attire. Timing is the same as parade nights: 1830-2115.
2. Effective Speaking
As mentioned in the previous section, this Monday marks the start of effective speaking with Mrs Gowans instructing. This year’s topics are:
- What is the relevance of the monarchy in Canada to the Air Cadet program in this post-Jubilee year?
- What is the impact of space junk?
- What do you think about man building an outpost on the moon? Or, how useful would an outpost be on the moon or Mars?
- What is the future of aviation as it relates to unmanned vehicles?
- Should we re-write history when we find out new information? Or, what is cancel culture and should it be relevant?
- How environmentally friendly are electric vehicles?
- What should be society’s priorities?
- What does it mean to buy local?
- What is sustainable energy?
- Cadet Choice (must fit into one of these categories)
- Cadet Life
- Science and Technology
- Aviation
- Canadian History or Citizenship
The cadet workbook for the program is downloadable at this link:

There is also a great video featuring a cadet speaking about Effective Speaking. Mrs. Gowans would like everyone to have a look at it here:

3. 126/809 RCACS Mixed Drill Team
Drill team is a go for this Thursday night. Again, it’s being hosted by 126 Flying Lancers Squadron in Niagara Falls. Anyone wanting to go, please sign up.
Here’s the info for the next practice:
When: Thursday, October 27 1830hrs – 2030hrs
Where: River View Public School, 3300 Cattell Drive, Niagara Falls
Dress: Appropriate Civilian Attire. Bring boots and wedge.
You will need to make your own way to practice as there is no transportation being provided. Regular attendance rules apply, so f you sign up, you will be expected to participate. Sign in as if you’re attending the squadron, however, instead of the location being 809, you’ll indicate “Drill Team”. If you sign up and cannot attend a practice, we expect you to notify 809 by email.
4. Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Campaign
The Legion is our major sponsor and deserves our support. We need every cadet to make themselves available on the next two Saturdays to help out. Cadets will be posted in front of local businesses and will be matched up in pairs. Please sign up and indicate your availability as follows:.
Here’s the info:
When: Saturday, October 29 and Saturday, November 5
Shifts: AM Shift (0900-1200) and PM Shift (1200-1500)
Where: Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124, 410 King Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON L0S 1J0
Dress: C3 (wear parka, toque and/or gloves as required)
A schedule will be posted once sign-ups are completed.
5. Remembrance Day Activities
Branch 124 of the Royal Canadian Legion (our main sponsor) has reached out to us to support them in their Remembrance Day Activities. This usually involves participation in not only the Remembrance Day ceremonies in both Old Town and in Queenston, but also includes a Poppy Drive and an overnight Vigil. The schedule of events is as follows:
Poppy Drive – Saturday, October 29 and Saturday, November 5
- Cadets will be required throughout each day to hand out poppies and take donations for the Legion.
- Parents and SSC members will be requested to assist with the logistics
Overnight Vigil – Thursday, November 10 at RCL Branch 124
- Usually starts at about 1900hrs and runs all night
- Cadets will be marched to the Queen St Cenotaph, in rotating shifts, to stand guard at the cenotaph.
- Parents and SSC members will be requested to provide support for breakfast for the cadets attending the vigil and ceremonies
Remembrance Day Ceremonies – Friday, November 11
The squadron will provide a marching contingent for two ceremonies:
- 1045 at Queen Street Cenotaph in Old Town
- 1245 at Queenston Cenotaph in Queenston
Full participation from the squadron is expected for each of the activities. If you’re in need of a letter explaining your absence from school on Friday, November 11, please let us know.
6. Cadet Co-op (High School Credit Program)
The Training Year Cadet Co-op is starting back up once again in partnership between UCDSB (Upper Canada District School Board) and RCSU Central. To be eligible a cadet must:
- Attend High School in Ontario
- Reside in Ontario
- Be a current cadet
There is a misconception that has come up over the years:
- Cadets must be a student from UCDSB – Incorrect
- The program is a ministry of education program, coordinated on behalf of the ministry through UCDSB. As long as the cadet is a student of any school board in Ontario (French, English, Public, Catholic, or even Private) they are eligible as the credit is linked to their OEN (Ontario Education Number)
Cadets can earn up to four (4) credits through the training year version of cadet co-op. It takes 90 hours of cadet activities (training, team practices, uniform prep, lesson prep, &c) to earn a credit, as well as completion of the pre-placement assignments, tracking their hours on a log sheet, and participating in your ACR. Why not earn some high school credits for what they are already doing?!
If you’re interested, please see Capt Lemoine for more information, including the application and a FAQ sheet.
Summary
All attendees must check-in for all in-person activities using the Registration for In-Person Events form.
